The "might be some surprises in the retained list" got me thinking...

What has he done wrong? OK, he's the wrong side of 30... so what? He's still twice as agile and athletic as the likes of Coutts. Twice as strong and productive as the likes of Scougall (who people are saying should return and be given a chance).

I feel that one of the problems this season has been a lack of subs that can have an impact on the game. Bringing DCL or Sammon on hasn't once looked like a sub that can change the game for us. I've witnessed JCR come off the bench and influence a game on a number of occasions.

He at least has the bottle to go FORWARD, take a player on and and try to create something. Right, OK, he might not have the greatest delivery in the world which can be a frustration... however I think a large part of that is down to us having a lack of targets in the box. Getting more players in the box is something Bergen Blade has explained that Chris Wilder's teams look to do.

I've seen many people list him in players we should definitely get rid of. What does everyone have against keeping him around?

I'm not saying he should be a starter but I believe he can help us get out of League 1 with a role from the bench. He's got a great attitude and one I wouldn't mind seeing retained on a 1 year deal on our terms.

Couldn't agree more, I know he's not the worlds greatest crosser but even when he did get the ball to a man last season they fluffed the chances, scougs and sharp at Oldham spring to mind..

Always a threat, defenders don't like him, if only he was a centre midfielder with a decent shot..can you imagine that...

Could be worth keeping JCR as a squad player/impact sub but as you have said, his final delivery is poor to say the least. And at the moment we don't have any tall strikers for him to aim for.

He's 33, awfully inconsistent and hits someone in the crowd every time he puts a cross in.

Yeh, he could be used as an impact sub late on in games, but is he really the calibre of player people want? I think a lack of out-and-out wingers at the club is clouding your judgement. Bringing a couple in should be a priority of Wilder's.

My Chesterfield-supporting mates said he "did a job" for them during his loan spell there and said they'd have him back. Can see that happening to be fair and hopefully it will.

We must be realistic though. We can't 'get rid of everyone except Sharp and Long' like some people keep saying.

Certain players that aren't necessarily the best are going to be kept around to make up the squad which hopefully will see us promoted. Even players like Basham aren't the ideal answer if you ask me, but for me he's good enough and committed enough to be part of the squad next season.

We aren't going to go and sign the 10 more players that we need to make a great squad - that just wouldn't be Sheffield United if we did that.

For all his obvious failings, he's a threat, he's exciting, he creates a buzz.

Reckon as an impact sub, he's worth keeping. And his top class attitude would be a bonus too in Wilder's efforts to knit together a squad. Really liked this snippet he had to say about mentoring Gboly Ariyibi recently

Wouldn't say no to us trying to poach Ariyibi himself btw.

What has he done wrong?

I'd say the answer is - he can't cross a ball. He can beat a man for fun but literally can't cross. He should just shoot hard and low as that would probably be off target and more often than not flash across the 6 yard box.

Or.

He could beat the last man and then just leave the ball for the GK to collect. This would save on stoppage time for having to wait for the crowd to throw the ball back so the GK can take a goal kick.

He can cross a ball.

Type "Conor Sammon miss" into YouTube for proof.

I think he's worth having around. His pace and willingness to run at people makes full backs back off, which is always useful. And he does have the odd goal in him.

A squad needs the odd player that is inconsistently capable of doing anything.

Must admit in league matches during Cloughs second season him and Murphy were the only highlights.

I really like JCR and I think played under a traditional 4-4-2 system and allowed the freedom to play his natural game, then he can be a threat, but I'd also like to see a younger up and coming winger signed who can play more and more as the season goes on, or better still someone capable of starting right from the start and JCR come off the bench. If JCR is "one of the surprises" then he will have been given a new contract, as opposed to merely taking up another year on his existing contract. Maybe the surprise is to unveil Michael Higdon as his first signing! I#d laugh so much if that happened! Followed by crying!

One player that really has to go is JCR. He's the type of player we really don't need around. Now that Wilder is in we want players with bottle, not bottlers. The guy can't even cross a ball.... which is kind of his job...

Does the "J" stand for Jesus?

One Man & His Cross
JCR stands for Jesus Christ, Really? Which is what I thought when it was suggested his contract should be renewed.

We are now on, apparently, a tight budget so my approach would be to ensure every penny is spent on assembling a team of players who work hard and play for each other and are good enough, consistent enough and fit enough to play around forty games a season.

Maybe that's the issue. Redknapp stopped Aaron Lennon from crossing quite quickly and taught him to pass the ball instead or replace him. I tend to go for the latter

Oh Swiss, I expect better than that from you....
"JCR can't cross a ball" People who perpetuatevthat sort of statement really need to think about what they are saying.
JCR has been crossing balls into the box longer than I care to think about. His variation and Pace on crosses has always made me think that he is an intelligent player who is probably thinking a step ahead of his teammates.
I'll give you that he may sometimes delay it when it should be delivered, but to say he can't cross a ball is just 'football supporter bollocks'
No offence intended :-)

If i could like it ten fold i would, couldn't agree more.

It's better to cross well than run around like a headless chicken every time.
JCR does my head in when he gets in a good position and then fucks up. Again. And again. All forward momentum is thrown away.

I wouldn't take things so literally...I couldn't be arsed to spend much more time going into the detail which i have done on this very forum on the subject of JCR over the past couple of years.

Possibly the most infuriating player to play for United in a while and he is the epitomy of how bad things are right now. Talented, but applies himself terribly.

So yes, i'll summarise, he can't cross a ball. Why? Because so rarely does the possession he's had result in creating something noteworthy for our strikers.

I hope that clears things up...
