Once the manager starts criticising the paying customers, the fans, it's difficult to survive for too long.
The atmosphere he spoke of is endemic of the fact we have underachieved for so long, not that we are somehow different to any other fans.
Those that brought even modest success were well supported.
Bassett brought us exciting football. Even after relegation fans were not harsh to him.
Warnock always had a few fans to contend with but he was often contraversial and self promoting so I think part of this was down to his personality and imflammatory comments e.g. Meadowhall. Him being one of us marks him out as the only one to get away with criticising the fans.
Robson moaned about the fans saying it was his Man U past they could not accept omitting the fact his expensively assembled squad was in the bottom half of the table. He was gone not long after.
Blackwell served up a lot of poor football but didn't really face outright open hostility.
Despite his modest points per game, Speed was not really too heavily criticised.
Adams was never got after despite relegation because people saw he failed to turn around a poor situation. There was no animosity though.
It is true we have become less patient in League One. But so we should. Before this stint we'd spent I think 4 seasons at lower than second tier. We're now onto season six.
Wilson started to get stick as he was taking us slowly out of the play offs on the trajectory at the time playing negative football in the third tier.
Weir was out of his depth like a little boy lost.
Clough never got to grips with the Club's size, constantly suggesting minor progress to be acceptable. His own arrogance did for him but he didn't really encounter Clough out chants.
Which brings us to Adkins. Pretty much got nothing right. Then points out fans were critical on the opening and closing days. A shame the reporter didn't allude to the fact one was a 4-0 drubbing after he'd had all preseason to put a team together and the other a tame 2-0 surrender against another football minnow.
Fact is, once you turn on the fans you're a goner unless you've got some stock in the bank and for Adkins the locker is empty.
For me now it's a question of when he goes this week not if. Not much coming back from that interview. He's burnt his bridges. If the Prince wanted the axe and McCabe didn't them yesterday's interview and team selection has surely done for him.
Once you lose the fans, you're beyond the point of no return.
