James Hanson

We need a target man and there aren't many better in this division. You're guaranteed double figures from him.
Will be a good rotation option and very useful to throw on with 20 minutes to go in games, or to start and wear the defenders down for an impact sub like Che.

Would have no problem with this at all. Significantly weaken Bradford as well.

Be nice to have an aerial threat again.

Hanson is a guaranteed 10+ goals a season.

Could be Wilder's Neil Shipperley.

I'd hardly say your garunteed double figures, he only got 9 last season

I was only including leave goals and appearancesee to be fair
Even then he's got 11
I think he's a key reason why they are where they are, they seemed to really struggle against Millwall without him
I see the reservations, but personally see him as being a decent signing

Not that I think we'll sign him

According to Wikipedia (don't laugh) he got 9 last season, and 11 this season. Are we talking about different things?

CW will bring in players to do certain roles - if he wants a big man up front whose purpose is to hold the ball up and be a physical presence then Hanson is your man. Round pegs in round holes.

And there is no one better at this in the bottom 2 leagues, than Hanson.

Lad is a right handful, and would be a good signing IMO

I think sometimes we're perhaps guilty of placing too much emphasis on a players potential to operate at a higher level. Yes, we perhaps need a solid core of players that would ideally be the spine of our team if promoted, but after that we just need players who will do a job in getting us out of the league.

One of those players, that if he's playing for you he's a good target man against you he's a right pain the the Arse, if we do sign him he should be forced to dye his hair ginger, to replace kitson as a focal point for oppo fans hate

The guy is a real cult hero at VP. They still refer to the 2-2 at Bramall Lane a few years back as The Hanson Game. Don't think he scored but dragged em back into it by the scruff of the neck. Would be a decent addition, leads the line very well even if not that prolific. Comparisons with Shipperley are not too wide of the mark if you ask me.

Spot on, and I reckon Wilder will be shopping in the bottom 2 leagues, with hungry ambitious players.

Lets worry about the Championship when we get there.

I laughed!
We have a different context of 'last season' that's all, as soon as the final whistle blew against Scunthorpe it was out of my mind :)

Just as well, I wish I could eradicate this season from memory too :(
Tell me a game and I'll not be able to tell you anything about it, despite attending and watching it for the full 90. Memory well and truly wiped :)

But yeah, I'd take Hanson, even if he was to score 9 goals he's 3x as good as Sammon with the height and strength and nuisance value to boot!
It'll be like having CHIEEEEEEEF all over again ;)

I`ve just undergone my second session of treatment to help me forget.

Lovely little place, just off Abbeydale rd.

Getting the names Connor and Dean, they must be the names burnt in deepest.
And why are the words alluded, grit, resilience, 6 big uns, endeavour, and pathway in my head?

Out of all the strikers in the division, when the ball gets chucked into the box against us Hanson is the one I'm most nervous about. He wins nearly all his headers and things happen around him. Assists don't tell the whole story.

As well as a target man I'd like us to sign at least one set piece taker and ideally someone with a long throw. Doesn't mean you have to be a hoofball team, they're just good options to have and will gain you points.

A bit off topic, but a couple of the SUFC youngsters have very good, long throws.

Who would be your ideal (and realistic) 'big man' be at the side of Sharp?

Wouldn't necessarily go with a big man. Would prefer pace and power TBH rather than simply ticking the 6'2" + box.

Che and Billy, with the right service, would do me nicely thanks v much. Assuming we can hang on to them.

But IF Wilder does want to play a typical big man, hold up, type striker who would you go for?

Hanson would be on my list, but behind Matt Smith - although whether he falls into the realistic category is debatable.

Would you class Duffy as a set piece taker out of interest?

I take your point but I would still go with Che and Billy up top to start as plan A. I like the idea of a big man to come off the bench to stir things up later in the game when there is a tendency to go more direct anyway. I would take Carroll to the euros for this very reason. Poor technical footballer but exceptional in the air.

I am also scarred with the awful big uns we have had over the last 5 years or so !!

Very few players that meet your criteria, would meet mine.

UTB

Yeah, I agree - if Wilder can bring on the Sharp/Adams partnership then all the better. We saw glimpses of it during the season, if that can be nurtured in pre-season then we're on to a winner.

Although, does anyone else think Adams has bulked up too much? At the cost of a bit of his pace as well in my opinion.

Wilder can sign anyone he wants as long as they give 100% every week

I'd give 100%. I'd need oxygen after 10 minutes, my fitness would make James T Wallace look like superman, my passing would make Basham look like Glenn Hoddle, my tackling would make Scougall look like Chopper Harris and my finishing would make Coutts look like Messi -but I'd be alright because I give 100%? I would like to see a modicum of talent as well as effort for my money if I was Wilder.

If you agree and big target man would be useful later in a game, why not the best in the league?

Would you class Duffy as a set piece taker out of interest?

Probably, yes. I think he took most of Burton's but I don't think he's an absolute specialist. Carey from Plymouth is a set piece taker and I think Anthony Forde might be too, so straight away that's three players who we should be looking at.

As for the strike partnership, the ideal partner for Sharp would be someone like Andy Williams, probably not him though because I think he's a bit past his best. But he's a decent runner, a hard worker, can challenge in the air, links up well and scores goals himself. Big mistake cancelling the deal for him when Clough got sacked, just typical that we'd do that... and then sign Sammon - who was also courted by Clough. Great choice.

I'd only be happy with Adams and Sharp if Adams lost about two stone and regained his ability to run fast. For a start.

Someone like Hanson with Sharp would be OK most of the time as long as we had pace and creativity elsewhere, especially out wide.
