Following on from GCB's most influential decade of being a Blade. This thread got me feeling all Bladey, Blade & got me thinking about those moments that gave me that warm fuzzy feeling of "thank god I'm a Blade".

Mine was the Cup semi against Hull. Separated by an entire division, we were huge under dogs. A crack pot team who were on the verge of relegation from England's 3rd division, bottom of the division after 10 games and well known short comings at Wembley. The turnaround shown that season was nothing short of a miracle. Before that game even kicked off, listening the the near 40,000 Unitedites belting out the GCB put a lump in my throat. It was a huge occasion. I'd never seen United score a goal at Wembley before that day... 19 minutes in, Jose Baxter steps up and fires United into the lead. Queue mass hysteria in the United end. Nearly 40,000 people lose their minds in the captial.

The game ultimately ended in defeat, but that didn't matter to me. My side went on to score 3 goals against a Premier League team. I'd been to watch United play in play off finals against Crystal Palace, Wolves, Burnley and Huddersfield and barely turn up in any of them. This was different. It was the first time I'd seen my team turn up in a big game and fucking take it to the opposition. We had no right to be in that game looking at the quality of the players on show, but my god they did me proud that day.

The hull semi final was pretty good.

So was most of the 100 point promotion season.

I’m young enough to not really remember us being that good and old enough to remember a lot of shit. So those two do stand out.

The whole Clough cup run was brilliant.

Warnock taking us the the prem was great too even if we did fuck it up in the end quite badly.

Taking my son to BDTBL for the first time. Registering my grand-son as a Junior Blade.
First game in Prem v Liverpool under Warnock.
Probably in that order.

Norwich away in the FA Cup fifth round in 1989. We lost 3-2, but Norwich were second in the top flight, and we were in Division 3. Deane and Agana had them absolutely terrified and it was the first time I realised that those two were genuinely top class players and not just pretty effective in our own division. The Hull semi-final was the closest I've seen to our players giving so much in a game that ultimately led to defeat.

And it's impossible to leave out Mel Rees's lap of honour at Wembley in 1993.

Northampton away for me. What a special day that was. Unfortunately I'm not old enough to have been at Leicester or Darlington. So Northampton is going to take some beating for me.

Having been at Darlington and leicester it was a great day to be with my son at mk dons last year.
Hope its not the last great day we have like that but knowing united i will have kippered it before they do.

Mk Dons Away
Derek Dooley singing Frank Sinatra, after getting promotion.
Applauding players after Hull's fifth went in
Watching Duffy score against them lot, still sends me all gooey even now.

I've had to whittle mine down to just the 4...

FA Cup Semi-Final at Wembley vs. Hull
The Che Adams show against Spurs
Chesterfield at home lifting the trophy
Brooksy's goal vs. Leeds at Elland Road

I grant you the first three. But the fourth... are you his mum? It was nice to beat Leeds, but I can think of at least ten prouder moments last season alone. Four of them were in one single afternoon!

Many of the above but one of my proudest moments was a minutes silence at Hillsborough for some Wednesday fans who had been killed on the M69 the week before. It was impeccably observed to by both sets of fans and left one feeling quite humbled. I actually felt proud of both sets of fans that day.

To confirm - I am not his mother. If I was he wouldn't of fucked off to Bournemouth.
How was that not a proud moment though - going top of the Championship for the first time beating your local rivals away under the lights. I stand by it.

Ha! I wasn't saying that it wasn't a proud moment, just not up there with the others.

Poking my Head thru the white railings at the kop end , when Eddie Gray was taking a corner for Leeds and landing a grade A gobber , on the back of his leg ,thats kids for ya.

I can see why that would stay with you.

Winning trophies and playing in big games is one thing, but gobbing on DirtyLeeds scum clearly eclipses that.

Leicester away for me too, was 15 at the time, travelled down in the car with my dad, uncle and cousin, I'll never forget the sea of green that was filbert street that day, the incredible performance, the endless rendition of

Oh we are Sheffield United
We play in the red white and black
And we are so proud
We'll shout it out loud
Division 1 were coming back

And the journey home, cars with scarfs hanging out, singing to each other all the way back up the M1, and waiting in the car park for the players to arrive back, I've had other great times following the blades but nothing quite like that whole day

Best day of my life that (although if the Mrs reads this, my wedding and the kids been born were obviously major highlights too).

An absolutely brilliant day, including everyone carrying Bassett all around the car park. There was enough joy that evening, to even bring a tear to Pinchy's eye.

Liverpool at home August 1990.

First time I ever saw my team in the top flight. So proud we got there, even though we lost that day. Loved the early 90s under Bassett felt like we were relevant in English football again.

Happily Bassett, Hughes, Beck and all the aimless “Kick it Long; Kick it Hard; Kick it High” merchants are now themselves an anachronistic irrelevance.

Yes, that horrible man Basset who gave me the best day of my life at Leicester and promotion back to the top tier.

Irelevant now maybe, but not even a miserable old scroat like yourself can erase memories of us regularly beating Arsenal, Liverpool and Manyoo, plus a derby double against the Massive.

Rising to the bait for one post only. And yes raking over old ground as you know I tend to agree with you on quite a few aspects of how the game should be played.

However.

Imagine me going back in time to my 14 year old self.

"What are you getting excited for you silly twat? Don't you know we've just hoofed our way here with a dinosaur for a manager?

Doesn't matter that we've not been in this position since we were a twinkle our dad's eyes and we've followed this team for a decade without a thing to get excited about.

I know we're opening against the best team in England, but it's garbage non-football and I demand you give your ticket to Stegosaurus Steve next door who is too stupid to realise these facts.

Now sod off and do some homework whilst 30,000 blades are celebrating their return to the top flight.

Oh and don't bother trying to show any interest for a few years either as despite finishing in the top 10 of the elite of English football and and getting to Wembley for the first time in 60 years it's still Dinosaur Dave at the helm.

You can get interested again in a couple of decades or so when this bloke called David Weir comes along and gets us playing some scintillating stuff"
