I was going to say 2002/03 (triple assault) but the misery of playoff final day means am going for 1990/91 when we didn't win til xmas then nearly broke the record for wins in a row until we were robbed at cheating jon fash's Wimbledon.

1991-92 - again in relegation trouble until the turn of the year and then our record from 4th Jan to 20th April was as follows P16 W11 D3 L2. We beat Wednesday twice that season, beat Liverpool at the Lane (that Deane goal) hit 5 at Forest followed by a week later with 4 against Man City at the Lane and ended up 9th in the top tier - our second best finish in my life time (as I was only 8 when we finished 6th in 74-75 my memories of that season are rather hazy)

Oh, and had we beaten Wimbledon in 90-91, we would have only equalled the club record for succesive wins, something we did do in 05-06.

For me it would have to be the 2002/03 season, as i am only 19 i was only born about 6 months before the 90/91 season started. the 02/03 season is closely followed by the promotion season.

UTB

No doubt 1970/71, Promotion Winning team that went on to top the old League One.

Best team to represent United in my lifetime.

Totally agree with the above and also the following season in the old 1st Division.

Quality football played by quality players.

Yet again though the management did not go on to consolidate by strengthening the team and the rot began to set in as star players such as Sammons and Currie were sold and inferior players were brought in as replacements.

81/82 - it was my first 'full' season supporting the Blades, in that I regularly went to games rather than the odd one here and there. What a season it was, yes it was 4th division football but so many great memories.

Closely followed by seasons 89/90 & 02/03.

In order (since 1970)

1. 1970-71 (brilliant football and promotion)
2. 1971-72 (first 10 games was fantastic)
3. 1974-75 (Sixth, only 4 points behind champions Derby)
4. 1973-74 (entertaining football with TC, Woody, Badger, Colquhoun and Salmons at their peak as a group, beating Arsenal 5-0, winning 2-1 at Chelsea, Spurs and Man U)
5. 2005-06
6. 1989-90
7. 2002-03
8. 1991-92
9. 1990-91
10. 1988-89

I was a part-timer between 1979-80 and 1987-88 so 1981-82 and 1983-84 dont really stand out to be in the top 10 for me

early 70's by a mile......................
no fancy hotels or a club in every country but a great team and manager and to top it all standing on the kop.

and yer think cheap as chips knows what he's doing ! and McCabes the savior.

It has to be 2002/03. For me, it was the first time I'd witnessed us as a winning club, going far to the finals. Wembley was heartbreak - as was both semis, but the way we got there will never be forgotten.

Would have to say the 1991-92 season, magical some of those games! Loads of great memories from other seasons but as stated earlier, we were looking doomed until that great run.

Mine was the 74/75 season but as per usual it had to include a shitty last match. All we needed was a win (2 points) at Birmingham and we were in Europe but it was not to be. We came away with a 0 - 0 draw and just like all the other frigging high days that have turned out to be low days since the euphoria of finishing 6th in the First Division past before we got home. Ask me what my worst season was and that may well be the one that followd but that's a different story.

Bassett years for me in the Prem. Deane and Agana, the old John Street, Bobby Booker (would've been booed pulling into SUFC car park these days), Wilf 'The Zone Man' and Derek French's pink baseball cap. None of this Premiership or Big Four crap.

All watch from the family enclosure in my SUFC shellsuit as a nipper. Happy days.

It has to be the 1989/90 season for me.

Deane and Agana in their pomp, Simon Tracey looked a world class keeper, Bob Booker, Lime Green Away shirts, some cracking matches and ultimately promotion.

To top it all off the last few weeks of the season was all documented for posterity in the United documentary, i wish it was available on DVD, i bet i couldn't watch the last one without a tear in my eye.

Two seasons are joint favourites - back to back promotions in 1988-9 and 1989-90

Great Seasons closely followed by 1960-61 Runners Up Div2 (to Ipswich) Cup Semi Final (Lost to Leicester City after 2 replays) Fantastic Season:thumbup:

1974-75. Missed European qualification by a whisker, played some fantastic football, TC was probably at the height of his powers and BDTBL seemed to be packed every game with a tingling atmosphere (especially the night games). Being young and foolish I thought we were on the brink of winning things and becoming a real power. Oh dear! :(

This one is closely followed by the 1989-90 promotion season and the final day at Leicester:

Copper: Get off the pitch lads

Me: Sod off, we're up!

Copper: If I make your day even better will you get off the pitch!

Me: It can't get any better than this

Copper: Wednesday lost and have been relegated

Me: You win, we're leaving :D

For me the best teams (so far, cos I'm still hoping I've not seen the best yet) were those of John Harris (Woodward, Currie & Salmons) and Dave Bassett (Deane, Agana & Booker). Two very different eras and two very different sides but back in the day there were still plenty of Blades grumbling about the players, management and general lack of progress at BDTBL, just as there are now. Many of the players that got the most criticism when they were playing are now revered as incomparable legends; the bloke behind me used to slag Morris and Edwards relentlessly, match after match, but I remember them both as cracking footballers. The wheel will turn and no doubt in ten years time there will be someone on here waxing lyrical about the halcyon days of Monty & Hendo...

Not quite true I am afraid. We thought at the time that a win at Birmingham would put us into the UEFA Cup, but it turned out not to be true. The reason was this.

At the time the UEFA Cup had a one club per city only rule. England had 4 places - 1 went to the League Cup winners and the other 3 went to the 3 highest placed teams not in the European Cup or the Cup Winners Cup. In 1975, Villa won the League Cup so they were in and Liverpool and Ipswich finished 2nd and 3rd so they were in. Everton had finished 4th, but due to the one club one city rule, couldn't qualify. So that meant 5th place carried qualification. Stoke had finished their programme and were 5th , but United could overtake them if they won that last game at Birmingham. They didn't and it looked like Stoke had qualified.

However, during the summer, UEFA removed the one club per city rule, so Everton were in and Stoke were out (much to Stoke's disgust). So even had United won at Birmingham, they still wouldn't have qualified for Europe...

probably 91/92, when I really started getting into football.

Don't think I enjoyed 05/06 as much as I should have done due to a few personal problems.

Would've loved to have been around in the early 70s.

90/91 for me. Getting humped every week and having kids at school taking the piss every Monday morning. Then coming back and shoving it down everyones throats.

I know a place you can get that United doc on DVD, PM if youre interested. Not sure I could post the link on here?

Thanks for that peice of edification Darren. However, we or some of us got excited about what was true at the time. We didn't exactly leave Birmingham saying "Not to worry because unknowing to anyone they are going to change the rules and we wouldn't have got into Europe anyway"!

Everton protested after the season had ended and then a month or two later the UEFA ditched the "one club per city" ruling.
