Your favourite Blades

I did an article for Flashing Blade in agreement with "Handsworth Blade" explaining why I thought Tracey was the better keeper. I will do another analysis and will post it in here. The only time I thought Kelly was the better keeper was during the 1994-95 season when Tracey seemed to have "lost it"

I think he 'lost it' the season before when Mark Stein scored 'that' goal - no keeper should be beaten at their near post.

We didn't win between beating Oldham 2-1 ion 1/1/94 and beating West Ham 3-2 on 28/3/94. We won twice (the Oldham game and v Chelsea on 27/11/93) between 24th August and 28th March - 2 wins in 7 months!

1993 /94. Am I right in thinking that although we didn't win many games we did draw quite a few? I think we drew as many games as Liverpool that season.

He played well when he came back into the side after Kelly's injury in the 3-2 win at home to West Ham. We won at Liverpool, Norwich and at home to Newcastle etc

Most of the top flight Bassett team count as my early favourites but the first side I physically watched gather any momentum was probably the late Kendall and early Spackman sides, so they're just as fondly remembered.

Those sides were only separated by a couple of years or so and yet only share the goalkeepers plus Whitehouse, Ward and Nilsen in common. 5 players but only usually 2 still in the first team.

Another player mentioned in this thread that sits in between these sides was Gordan Cowans. I was only young but his quality was obvious despite his age. How did his old Villa European Cup teammates Withe, Mortimer and McNaught come across? Given they were all younger and United were possibly poorer as a team you'd expect them to have shined. I remember Peter Withe's wiki saying he hated it here though. Can anyone enlighten me?

Withe was ok but he wasnt worth the big wages we were paying him. McEwan loaned him to Birmingham and he scored two against us which got Brealey fuming. Mortimer played a few games on loan. McNaught was a strong and dependable centre back but had to retire due to a blood clot in his calf (I think)

Cowans was superb ,Macnaught was pretty good and Mortimer half decent too. With wasn't that bad ,he certainly worked hard but didn't get the breaks ,I think he got loaned out and scored against us which wont have helped. Mcgrath was another ex Villa who was brilliant but I don't think he came directly from them. I can only think of Matt Lowton who has gone the other way.

Didn't we get Tiler and Gage from Villa too?

I'm struggling to think of players that went the other way as well.

Quiz question incoming

Since the war we have only sold Lawton to Villa but we have bought 6 players (including Withe, Tiler and Gage) and loaned in 5 players (including Mortimer) from them.

Name them.

Tip: McGrath came from Derby
