And my last one but I can't find a video of, is Tri Dellas against Portsmouth (I think it was Portsmouth anyway)

In 1999, SUFC decided not to produce a video of the goals in 1998-99 season because they thought that it wont sell well. I wrote to them saying it was a pity cos there were great goals scored that season and I mentioned that Tri Dellas goal

Thanks Silent, that explains why Dellas goal can't be found - shame.

So talking about Greeks got me thinking about that goal. I’ve not seen it since the game and it always stuck with me so did some googling and found this thread..

I was 12 at the time and was convinced he struck it from 389 yards and it broke the roof of the net before breaking through the roof of the Kop and then landed somewhere near Dinnigton.. I endured the Pompey unofficial season review and found the goal. Good but somehow not as great as I remember still a screamer though.. (skip to 30 minutes)
Silent Blade for you too

Scrolled through all the previous and surprised there’s no mention of Richard Creswell’s goal v Plymouth?

He’s off the pitch behind the goal. The goalie rolls it along the ground to kick it and Creswell sneaks up on him from behind to rob him and fire it into the goal.

Hilarious goal and few could believe what they’d seen- least of all the Plymouth goalie!

First time I've ever seen it and I was disappointed.

I just found that video on YouTube as well. Was going to start a thread about it but wont bother now.

Brilliant! Many thanks mancunianblade

Bloody hell, the Holy Grail, not seen that goal since the day it happened, on my mind he was another 10yds out and it arrowed into the top corner, Saunders' goal was more impressive.

Great find!

Bob Atkins v Rotherham Utd away. Not much time left, it was a corker. If I remember correctly, back to goal, controlled the ball and leathered it on the turn into the net at thenscrapyard end. Cue mayhem everywhere. We stood in the Main Stand but towards the Tivalli.
There was a top team goal scored by Hodges v Luton(?) that involved Hodges and Deane playing a one-two on halfway, Deane running down the left and crossing for Hodges to score. Gammon was probably involved at some point too.

Gammon, yes ! Some people have pineapple with it but give me two fried eggs any day.

Steve Wigley versus Blackburn Rovers 1985. Like the John Barnes goal for England vs Brazil in Rio in 84, but better. Much, much better.

32 years have passed and this remains the best goal I have ever seen a United player score. Sadly there's no film of the game.

My favourite? Dane's goal at home to the Pigs in 1991-2.

That's a fair description of it: we broke after they had a corner and Kennedy had loads of room to run.

Pleased that others have mentioned this one; I've always wondered why a goal that merely helped cement us in 8th place in the second division during the wilderness years of the mid-80's, has stuck in my memory.

I was stood on the Kop, behind the net , just below the central gangway and it was indeed a reyt goal.

Len Badger v Ipswich 1971. 30yard screamer

John Francis v Brighton 1989. Not the greatest goal but we were 3-0 up then managed to go 4-3 behind. Then Jock scored a pen and Francis snatched it in the 90th minute with a diving header. The place was buzzing as we left the ground

2-1. Beagrie equalised with a header. Frain came on as sub with a few mins left (many groaned saying putting on a sub was too near the end of the game) and scored with a well executed shot from outside the box

"David Frain grabs the winner in spectacular style with only his second kick of the game." as described in the 'Action' page in a subsequent programme.

Few off memory

Wigley v Blackburn 85/86 - solo run and goal
Frain v Sunderland 86-87 top corner finish
Agana v Barnsley 87-88 last minute great goal
Deane v Mansfield Cup 88/89 knee up then volleyed in with back to goal
Deane v Leicester 89/90 away to put us 2-1 up not a great goal but seemed to take an age to go in and the sheer emotion- we knew then we’d go up
Hodges v Derby home 90/91 the importance of the goal and the fall over after
Bryson v Sunderland away 90/91 great effort also very important
Lake v Saints 91/92 an absolute screamer

To complete my triumvirate of Chris Porter mentions on topics such as this- I was riiiight next to the goal when he scored his first goal against forest. Not that it’s the greatest goal I’ve seen at the Lane- I think it’s hard for a penalty to be particularly spectacular, but it symbolises so much more to me in my eyes. Even more so considering he’d only just come on as a sub.

Realistically I can think of plenty of better goals- even this season we’ve had more significant ones (such as Duffy’s bounce-ender), just gotta keep the Porter appreciation society going ;)

One of the nice things about watch the Goal Rush on channel 5 is that some weeks you'll be treated to the sight of Porter burying another chance from a couple of inches out, followed by his little jump and fist pump celebration. Hope he keeps bothering lower division defences for a few more years!
