Youngsters vs Coventry - Penalty Madness!

I think it's definitely a case of having some very young players in there and also being on our third choice youth keeper.

Also, don't forget, our league form wasn't amazing last season. It was a markedly different case in the cup.

Results at this level should be an irrelevance.

Their education and development should be the primary goal.

Agree about the primary goal, but have to disagree about results being an irrelevance. One-off losses are fine and overall it's better to learn than win at all costs - however, if the team isn't learning how to win they're not learning the right stuff.

It's no coincidence that some of the best young players about have come through some of the more successful academies (including our own). For that reason I was shocked to see a 6-2 reverse until I saw the circumstances.

Looking at that team there were only a couple of players that played in the Youth Cup run. If you take out your 2 centre halves and keeper you may well struggle until the younger players learn to adapt to a higher standard of football

OIn a tangential point, what's the most penalties anyone can remember in a first team game? I can think of 3 (all missed, 2 for us one for them) in the 0-0 draw with Blackburn on 9/9/06 and 3 in the 2-2 draw at Tranmere on 27/3/82 (2 for us - both scored - and one for them - missed).

Any advance?

I can't answer that, though I did think about that 0-0 game with Blackburn last night, when Motty's question on Five Live was which was the last PL team to miss two pens in a game. I didn't hear the answer, but surely it wasn't us five years ago, somebody else must have done it since?

That's only because we were resting a lot of players for the academy league to make sure they were fresh for the Youth Cup.

Maybe they will follow Arsenal's lead and offer a free ticket to another game this season.

There were 3 at Oxford in 1997-8 as well. Deane hit the post, Fjortoft scored, and Tracey saved Nigel Jemson's kick, although Jemson followed up to score. United won 4-2.

Well there can only be 2 explanations for this first Smegson was ref and 2nd we were short because if you look at team pembo had to play:rolleyes:
