I'd rather we had a go with the Academy products like ironside, McFadzean and the rest than short term signings and wanky loans.

I also remember a few years ago Raul (at least I think it was Raul) alerting us to a deal that Hibs were having on their home shirts. If you bought a home shirt with the name and squad number of one of their own sprog players on the back it worked out cheaper than getting a plain one.

So why don't we have a bit more faith in our young players, rather than signing old players on short term contracts or loans with less impact than Johnny Rockliffe in a singles bar - Kitson, Robson, Higginbotham, Poleon, Forte? Perhaps a bit of faith now may work wonders in the long term. It seems like promotion this season is slipping from our grasp, and the players on short term contracts and Forte won't be here next season unless we manage miraculously to go up.

Our Academy products will hopefully at least have some pride and passion in them, rather than seeing a short spell here as merely a stepping stone to a better contract elsewhere.

Oh dear SV. You're falling into that age old trap of thinking you know something about the game and believing the "hype" around our youngsters.

Don't you know there are people at the club with a zillion years of proper football knowledge that see these "so called" prospects everyday etc. etc. etc.

You jest, but I think it's a serious point. And most football fans do actually know fuckall about football, witness 10,000 different opinions on the way out of the kop every week.

Whilst I question Wilson's judgment about the youngsters, I don't supprt the principle of sticking with youth, I want the best availbale players, loanees, purchases, youngsters on the field.

Youngsters care no more about SUFC that anyone else, when it comes to contract offers. I get no more pleasure out of home grown talent, compounded by the fact that if they're any good they will want to go and we will sell them. And the idea that the fans would be more patient is also bollocks, as you can witness regularly at the Lane.

Just get the best players we can on the pitch, wherever they're from.

I think that most of us don't know much about the kids in the academy or on the fringes, but as SV alludes to, if promotion is slipping away, what do we have to lose?

Lets give them a chance.

Well, we do have one who is better than anything else we could have attracted as a loanee.

Rank bad luck has robbed us of him making an impact towards the end of this season - Diego. Whether you'd had the chance to view him much depends on whether you've watched the U21s but all of the coaching staff know.

I didn't think Joe Ironside would push through this year but he's done well in the cameos so far. Wilson's pronouncement today about Porter obviously means he doesn't think Ironside is ready above Porter. We will see. I hope Kitson doesn't miss many games but I'm really not confident of Porter being the answer.

And now Poleon has gone back, I do believe we have another who could make an impact - McFadzean.

From my viewings of him, he does care and he will die for the cause but of course he has minimal experience to date.

Wilson's hand may be forced . I have absolutely no problem with Callum being chucked in for 5 minutes, 45 or 90.

You won't see me criticising him if he does make a mistake.

Too many youngsters on the park at any one time inevitably results in too many mistakes and the fact is that DW cannot afford any player making mistakes at this stage of the season, youth or experienced. I agree we should have one or two of our home developed lads but not a whole bunch - it's not as though the U21 are walking their league is it?

De Girolmo would have made a difference as an impact sub but is crocked for 12-18 months and of the rest of them, Ironside apart, none seem to have the quality to make any real and positive difference. Before anyone comes back to say they have to be given a chance - well some of them have and haven't made any more impact than just making up the numbers - harsh but true.

I think Ironside & McFad are quite near the trust level a manager must feel before he sticks a young lad in, but is the time right now? I reckon Wilson will be damned if he does and much the same if he doesn't.
However, if we go up he'll have got the decision making correct overall, but woe betide Danny if we don't make it...the sharks will circle for sure...

In theory we have cover in each position but it’s thin if we get any more injuries and suspensions. I would only expect the subs to be those in brackets ie unless we have a further crisis I don’t think we’ll see Kennedy Williams, Harriott or Whitehouse on the bench (except we have to see one of them in the next two games and McMahon is suspended - bet it is Williams)

Ironside and McFadzean are certain picks for the bench

Long
(Coyne)

McMahon Maguire Collins Hill
(Westlake) (Higginbotham) Kennedy Williams

Robson McDonald Doyle Murphy
(Flynn) Harriott Whitehouse (McFadzean)

Kitson Forte
(Porter) (Ironside)

Plus Willis Barry

Not available injury: Howard, LJF, Miller, Diego
Not available loan: Chappel, Tonne

I don't think anyone is suggesting that we just throw them all in and see how they go.

It just seems odd that we would rather sign somebody on loan in desperation who has played only 7 senior games instead of trying one of our own youngsters. It must be a real kick in the teeth for McFadzean and players who are on the fringes.

For what it's worth, I reckon Willis, McFadzean, Whitehouse, De Girolamo and Ironside will all have careers in the football league at least.

The utilization of the loan market by SUFC this season has been very disappointing with regard to the quality of player we have got in Cofie, Poleon were a complete waste of a place in the matchday squad and their offerings when they did play were awful. Forte is not much better.
In all honesty are our young players (McFazdean, Ironside and Diego) worse than the three mentioned above.
I think not

to be honest the problem isnt so much not playing the youngsters, its signing useless old duffers. the theory was theyd be much better than our youngsters, who probably arent really good enough. the reality is weve signed a load of rubbish.

That's the trouble with a lot of youngsters like Poleon and Cofie they get the hype and the money too early all of a sudden they are in a kickers division like this one and they are like little boys lost

Fully agree. we have had rubbish players on loan to us from big clubs such as Twiss, Newby etc

I'm Ollecising this just in case anyone has thought that using the Academy prospects a bit more might just be the way forward now?
