PNE Chairman today:

"We are yet to decide how competitive we want to be next season"

That's real beat your chest, inspiring stuff. Just the kind of comments you want to promote the sale of season tickets!

Perhaps McCabe's policy of 'if you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all' is understandable after all.

Have to ask Fleety: did you make the 8.2 mile trip the other Saturday?;)

Sounds like a bloke saying as little as possible to keep his powder dry for next season. If he makes a statement of intent then suddenly every player they go for goes up by 50%. Says little to nothing then the expecation remains small and perhaps they will pick a couple of players up on the cheap.

Makes sense to me.

And yes, I do think McCabe is bad.

He's made a lot of bad mistakes over the last 4 years, but that doesn't make him a bad person!

You Think McCabe's Bad.......

Yep, always have done and he's done nowt to sway me in any other direction.

At least the Preston chairman's said something, not that it amounts to much but at least we know he still has a pulse.

I agree that bad mistakes don't make you bad.

In terms of the actual topic of the thread, it's not a shock really.

I think it's said from a business point of view and not really trying to relate to what the fans want to hear.

Similarly, if I think back to our promotion to the PL it was apparent that limits were placed on how competative we would be by the budget restrictions that were in place. We didn't really come out and say it like PNE's chairman has, but in the cold light of day we did what was right. The subsequent decisions the seasons after are topics for other threads - but with a change of league or circumstance comes a change of budget. Every fan of a club wants to hear that their team is doing what they feel should be possible to get to the top or back to the higher level. However in the real world the dream needs to be paid for or the goal adjusted. That's life and but not what the fans want to hear upon relegation.

Well at least he's being truthful and not surrounding whatever he says with spin!

Straight forward and direct!

It's not a bad strategy to:
A. Down play the situation.
B. Tell the fans exactly what's happening.
C. It buys time to have good long think and board room debate about next seasons budgets etc.

This is exactly what the KM and Board should be coming out with to take the pressure off the Club to themselves!

The complete silence is what is sparking thousands of fans debate and arguments! The Fans were split already, the board room and now pushing the rest away.

"We are yet to decide how competitive we want to be next season"

That certainly told them!

Exactly, it'll be funny if he later comes out with 'We've decided that we don't want to be competitive at all'!

Or proves it by keeping Neil Mellor for next season's assault on midtable. Preston won't do anything next season; their finances are worse than ours.

Please quantify that.

With pleasure:

A long-standing Preston fan and the owner of a string of racehorses, including the 2005 Grand National winner Hedgehunter, Hemmings also brought in Maurice Lindsay, the media-savvy former chairman of Wigan rugby league club, to be his eyes and ears while he tries to prop up a club more than £18m in debt and losing a reported £400,000 a month, providing loans well in excess of £14m to keep them afloat.

The article also says that they budgeted for gates of 13-14,000. They're on 11,800.
