Wtf is our midfield?

Sticking with 3 at the back so that we have wingbacks offering width until such time that we bring in players suited to a back four and have some attacking wide players to fit the manager's preferred system would make more sense than chaining the back four in their own half and plugging every gap on the pitch with a striker leaving us with no creativity.

The team selections so far have played to our weaknesses rather than our strengths.
Why do we think that highly paid professionals cannot change the way that they play ?
Other than Basham there is not a lot of individual change needed to play different systems.

Saw Basham skip past of their players a couple of times last night then realise he wasn't supposed to do that so he got rid of the ball and ran back to his defensive position.
I can't understand why the system has to be so rigid, let the players have a little license to express themselves.
Basham skipping past a couple of players is credit to Basham, but when Basham makes a poor decision that's Slav's fault?

There is a BIG difference between avoiding risks - which Slav has repeatedly said isn't his style, he's a risk taker - and retaining possession in order to draw your opponents out to create gaps, then exploit them.

Baldock is a prime example, I counted 7 times last night when played the ball backwards UNNECESSARILY. That's not what Slav is about, that's Baldock not wanting the responsibility of using the ball, not understanding his instructions or not being able to do it. Either he learns and develops, or someone comes into the team who can do it. Whichever way, the team improves and transitions into Slav's identity.

I get the point about systems but the idea this is rigid and what we've been used to isn't rigid is nonsense. The outcome under Wilder's tactics were spectacular, but every player had a very defined job to do and was not allowed to deviate from that. Now that's rigid. All it needed was 1 or 2 to have an off day and it affected everything.

Slav is using different players in different roles, feeling things out. If Brewster on the right wing led to a winning goal it would've been a masterstroke. It also means that if a player gets injured we'll have the ability to rotate without playing square pegs in round holes.

We've also had no pre-season and no new signings, neither of those are the fault of SJ. It'll take time and a handful of signings to come together. In the meantime we've all bought a ticket for the rollercoaster, it's just a ride.

Which ever way you see it one of Bashams many plus points is his ability to break forward at pace, last night he looked like he had been told not to do that. He also probably thought this new manager didn't pick me for the first game, what's that all about .

I tweeted a thread on twitter earlier which include radar graphs of our CM's. This is a good way to take a look at the strengths and weaknesses of them, and which ones could work the best together.
