Would you rather win the League Cup or be promoted to the Premier League?

Newcastle haven't won anything since 1955.

That's pretty impressive for a club of their size.

They won the Fairs Cup, the precursor to the UEFA Cup, in 1969.

I'd take the league cup over promotion. Seen United win promotion 6 times, twice to the top flight. Never seen us win anything. Just getting in a final would be something after seeing us fail in 6 semi finals.

League Cup. The Blades have never played in any major European competition and its my dream to see us play in Europe in my lifetime. Doubt we'd have much chance of doing it through a Premier League placing. The Championship is one of Europe's strongest leagues, and I think any Championship club would have a decent chance of making it to the group stages of the Europa League.

Incidentally, aren't the Blades the biggest club in Europe, at least attendance-wise, never to have played in any major European competition?

I don't know about Europe (though I wouldn't be surprised if it's true) but we are arguably the biggest name in English football not to have played in Europe. Of the teams who've spent significant time in the top tier since European competition started, Charlton, Palace, Wimbledon and Luton have also missed out, though Palace (3rd in 1991), Luton (league cup winners 1987) and Wimbledon (FA Cup winners 1988) would have qualified but for the post-Heysel ban and the few places allocated in the years after the ban was lifted.

Oxford's spell in the top flight was brief - 3 seasons - but they would also have made it having won the league cup in 1986

They won the Fairs Cup, the precursor to the UEFA Cup, in 1969.

They also got to FA Cup finals in 74, 98 (boooo!) & 99, a LC final in 75 and were prem runners up in 96 & 97. They have had a couple of seasons in the Champions Lge and one in the Cup Winners Cup.

I'd say they've done slightly better than us, with our 1936 FAC runners that probably no-one who currently attends BDTBL saw.

To be honest, I'd rather win the League Cup. See my team at Wembley lifting a cup, memories that would stay with me forever. I know that doesn't make financial sense but surely football isn't just about money? I know it is unlikely at the moment that we will win it, but I wish we had played a stronger side yesterday and made a real go of it. Oh well, maybe next year.
How about seeing them lift the cup at Wembley, final day of next season, Spurs away!!?? Totally impossible, but fuck me, my nob would fall off!!!

Win the league cup its the only major English trophy we haven't won we've won all four divisions and the fa cup already but never won this one

Win the League Cup or the FA Cup

Getting promoted to the Premier League would be embarrassing watching Huddersfield, Burnley, Bournemouth spending £15 million on a player and us struggling to land a £2 million Championship third choicer

We'll have attracted additional investment by then, from China. It is all part of the plan, started many years ago when Desun sponsored us, even though they didn't have any products or services to market in the UK. Then came Chengdu Bulls, then came Hao Haidong. And now we have "Hua Ling" as sponsors and more and more Chinese students coming to watch us every week. It is only a matter of time before we sell out to a Chinese consortium and most of you on here are wearing red and white lampshade hats on the kop.

Oh yes, and to answer the OP, I'd rather see us get promoted to the Prem. Apart from the financial sense in that, it means we'd get to see the world's best footballers plying their trade every week. I'd like us to win a cup too, but that's just a little bonus compared to competing at the highest league level in the world.

if it was the Fa cup i would be saying yes. League cup no from a finalincial sense because you get more money for being in the 3rd round than you do for making league cup final
FA Cup (just once in my life, please) > promotion > joke cup.

The LC has lost all credibility in recent years. The "big boys" use it to give their kids and reserves some game time, until they get to the semis, then they wheel out the big guns. The FA Cup is a historic tournament that most teams still take seriously.

The Milk/Littlewoods/Rumbelows/Coca-Cola/Worthington/Carling/Capital One/EFL/Carabao Cup lost all credibility when the pigs won it. Winning cups are a bit of fluff compared to solid progression through the leagues - Ask Pompey or Wigan. The most recent time we had 'success' in the FA Cup was away at Man. United. A solid display ruined by that plank Hammond. Still, it enabled his mate Adkins to make off with the proceeds in his ill-deserved pay-off.

Seriously I'd prefer promotion as well
But only if they took it seriously this time and didn't treat it like some vacation from the real footballing world.

I could literally have killed Warnock and McCabe every time they said " we're just happy to be here"

They might have been trying to play it down and take the pressure off our players but it stank of small time, and if they bought Premier League quality at the time the pressure wouldn't have been so great

If they ever get up again and got relegated due to lack of ambition I think the damage would be permanent and fatal
