Worse start by a United Manager?

OK, so I did some more analysis. It is now (unsurprisingly) the worst start to a baldes managers career in the last 30 years, on the basis of PPG (assuming 3 points for a win).

I like graphs, so I did a graph, showing the PPG of all managers since Basset and how there PPG has changed over their first 23 league matches (which is how many Adams will reach by the end of the season).

I also did a bit of research into whether or not the PPG after 6 games was indicative of the PPG after 23 games.

I didn`t really find a like, but ominously only 3 of our previous 10 manager have managed to improve on their 6 game PPG after 23 games.

In the below table an * indicates where the manager did not manage us for 23 games, in these cases I have taken their overall PPG.

You deserve a pat on the head for that SellyOak ;)

Interesting stuff. It's worrying that Adams has performed so badly with a similar team to what Speed had. It could easily be argued that Speed jumped from a sinkign ship and Adams has had a much tougher job mind. Speed's last 6 games where L, D, W, W, L, L (7 points and a 1.16 points per game ratio) which is significantly better than Adams start, but I think Adams had had the more difficult set of fixtures.

*where is the thanks botton these days*

And this is going to be our worst season for home defeats for a long long time. 8 defeats already...the last time I can think of that we were so bad was 1987 and our home record that season ended up being W8 D6 L8....we are going to struggle to match that this season. Previous worse before that was 1976 - 10 home defeats. Needless to say we were relegated on both occasions.

We're on course to beat our total of 10 home defeats in the 1975-6 season. And that really was a dire season!

I don't know what our record number of home defeats in nany one season is, but we must be getting close. Our record number of league defeats overall (ie home and away) in any season is 26. At the moment we're on 16 with 17 matches left. If our current rate of defeats continues we could get quite close to that record as well. Although I should add that the 26 defeats came in only 42 games.

Could it?

Speed was working directly with the shower of shite that Hoofy had managed to drag together and prepare ("launch it to the big fella") in the summer for his. Didn't envy that task.

yes it could. Your second sentance is correct, but Speed left us even further in the shit than Blackwell did. He reacted like a rabbit in the headlights to us struggling and had it not been for Andy Reid (though he must take credit for bringing him to BDTBL) he would probably have a similar record to Adams. He left us in a shabby state and even lower on confidence. That said, Carver managed a win (and a few losses of course). I am not defending Adams, just think he's been up against it.

Haven`t got the H/A split (yet), but these are the "top" seasons in terms of league defeats:

On the other hand, Speed was left with blackwells squad, with only being able to bring in loan players. Adams has been able to bring in his own permenant players as well as loans.

That is bleak viewing if we're honest.

>looking at the squad now would the other managers have struggled
even mourinho would struggle with this shower

I don't know what our record number of home defeats in nany one season is, but we must be getting close.

In the last 30 years we have lost 9 home games once (90/91), 8 - 4 times and 7 - 4 times

EDIT: bugger included Cup games

In the last 30 years we have lost 8 home games 3 times (one of those being this season) and 7 - 4 times

Of course he would. He's not used to managing in the lower leagues, just expensive playboys. Most of us could buy the title given enough cash, it's managing on an almost non-existent budget with demoralised players that really tests a manager's ability.

1929-30 was a made goal scoring season 91 for 96 against!! was this the offside rule change!?

>Most of us could buy the title given enough cash
heh.. there's more to it than that mate.. a bunch of expensive playboys must be quite difficult to manage i would have thought (see man city).. i mean if that was all there was to it, man utd, real madrid and bayern munich would win every year.. umm .. hold on a minute :)

Oh behave yourself, there's a reason he is not used to managing in lower league clubs is because he is a quality manager.

When he was in charge of a 'worse' club, Uniáo de Leiria, he took them to their highest ever league position in Portugal.

Porto, I don't recall masses of money being sprawled around either. Got a record points total in his first full season, and also won 2 cups that year if my memory serves me right, with one of these being the UEFA cup. Going on to win the Champions league the following year too against massive odds.

The only time he started spending vast amounts was at Chelsea.

Mourinho, would be able to shift this team of losers up a load of gears and soon us have us safe.

Yeah ,his start isn`t really getting much better.

Realistically we need to be avereagiong a point a game (across Adams first 23 matched) in order for us to not get relegated.

Thats an improvement of 0.5 PPG against his current PPG.

Only 1 manager has improved his PPG by 0.5 or more when comparing 8 game PPG to 23 game PPG and that was Kendall.

Admittedly no-one else has started from such a low point, so that might help him...

I cannot see us turning this round, and i'd rather see Adams blooding the youngsters now for a 2 year stint in League 1 to be honest.

Other things we should be looking at is convincing Cresswell to find another club, and us paying up some of his contract as a sweetener.

With the league table as it stands at the moment, that would be a stupid thing to do. I also think we are going down, but if we win on Saturday - unlikely but possible - we are out of the relegation zone and the pressure goes on Palace. We have to play to win every game and playing a set of children will not achieve this.
