Worksop Town in trouble

I would be happy to make a considerable contribution if Peter Whitehead agreed to sell the ground and Keith Ilett left control of the club to me.

Fuck them, who cares ...let the Star get going the 'Save our Worksop' Like they did a few years ago with that team from South Barnsley. The Star really don't understand how much us Blades hate them????

By the way Booker4 , apologies if you’ve taken any of the comments above personally (I doubt you have). I know your heart is in the right place with this, it’s just the club in question that raises questions over misplaced sympathy.

I was born in Worksop and I have fond memories of the earlier 3 sided ground at Central Avenue. Shared with Notts CC club, who played a number of cricket league matches there. I remember watching them play Yorkshire there, when grumpy Fred Truman refused to sign autographs. I was about 10 then.
The Tigers were a half decent non league side back then.

I agree with this. And to be honest, I've no links or affection for any club, other than Sheffield United FC. I threw a bit in the bucket for Rotherham United though a few years ago when they were in trouble. And, to be fair, if Sheffield Wednesday ever got in trouble and needed to have a bucket collection (next season maybe?) I'd put all rivalries aside for a moment and put my hand in that bucket - and grab as much out of it as I could!:D

Not at all Birdwell. I'm not connected in anyway to Worksop and even if I was, I haven't seen anything on here that was personal. Everyone's entitled to their opinion and I just wanted to raise it on here and people can make their own minds up if they want to give any money.

I appreciate the message though, that's very thoughtful.

I really don’t know how non league clubs survive, they have limited income from meagre gate receipts and pay ridiculous sums of money to bang average footballers, as a business model it is just unsustainable.

Many clubs only survive off the ego and perceived reflected glory of some local business owner. But football on a local level is dying, the FA plough money into Women’s football while seemingly oblivious that the men’s amateur game. is sleepwalking toward obscurity. Where once there were ten leagues, now there are two and its the same story across the UK. So where there were 1400 lads playing regularly, now there are 280 which reduces the pool for the next level to choose from?

I’ve watched a lot of semi pro football, NEC, Northern Prem and Conference North the standard is pretty poor and some of the money being paid is ridiculous. I don’t know how some of them dare take their brown envelope tbh, but one things for sure, it can’t and won’t go on forever.

It always amazes me at how far down the pyramid clubs start paying players, kids who barely stand out at an average midweek 6 a side and would probably play for free anyway. It sounds harsh but this often tempers my sympathy for non-league clubs who have the begging bowl out. Likewise clubs who get involved with the local 2 bob millionaire who starts paying money to try and plough through the leagues at a completely unsustainable rate when they've spent years just happy to exist.

I'm supportive of women's football and its laudable that the FA are finally taking it seriously. I have a daughter and want her to be able to have easy access to competitive football on whatever basis if that's what she wants to do, but the FA do seem to have a blind spot to the fact that participation in men's football is dropping off a cliff. I don't think its some kind of reverse sexism, just complacency and incompetence (although government and to a lesser extent local authorities also deserve some blame). There is no denying the lack of participation though. A lot of teams just play friendlies now because they can't guarantee 11 every week or a usable pitch to play on. I've played in a few small sided leagues as well and they seem to be haemorrhaging teams.

I know someone (played for Worksop at one point too) who was picking up 2k a week in the 6th level.

2k a week? How is that really sustainable unless someone was funding the accounts out of their own pocket?

Exactly.

As I understand it it was being funded by an individual.

Nonetheless you'll not be surprised to hear that the club went belly up.
