At the old Ball Inn ground which is now a housing estate. Woody is kicking the ball towards my childhood bedroom window, which was around 100 yards away from the back end of the ground. Part of the wall had crumbled away there, so I could watch training and youth games from my bedroom, as long as they only played on the Myrtle Road side of the pitch.

It was possible to sneak into the ground and play in proper nets (!!) until the groundsman came out and chased you away...

Jumpers for goalposts etc etc

You must know LSF and the Kelseys then ?
Is that the Hallamshire being built in the background ?

It is I think. Given the kit and Woody's hairstyle, the pic is probably from 1969 or 1970. We moved to the Arbourthorne in 1971.

And I don't know the people you mention :-)

I played a few games on there for t'Junior Blades - and scored a couple of times. Big, chunky square wooden posts and crossbar as I remember but a massive pitch to play on when you were a kid.

I was never so privileged. Me and my mates used to clamber up the wall on the west(?) side of the ground and one of us would go in goal, whilst the others peppered him with shots whilst he said "and Brown pulls off another great save". They often kept the floodlights on for a while after a night game, so that was prime time to get up there and get that real big match feeling. It was usually about 10 mins when the groundsman would realised we were there and he would wheeze across the pitch as we scambered back down the wall whilst giving him the rods.

Square goal posts ,great for head gashes :) We preferred the hockey nets on Abbeydale field because we were only small and they left the nets in, so even if you scored a belter you didn't argue about who had the 100 yard trudge to fetch the ball. Made you a lot more accurate :)

heh.. same thing on Rowlinson field ;)
i used to love playing monday/tuesday nights in the winter because Rowlinson would be lit up for the night school .. it was the nearest we got to 'floodlights' :)

The small park between Bramall Lane and Asline Rd was an absolute godsend for us as kids. Sometimes pissed-up blokes would roll out of The Earl of Arundel and join in our game. They spent more time on the floor than on their feet. :)

We knew how to cross a ball in those days, Woody & Badger.
A team to be proud of and players who were proud to wear the shirt.
Where we are today words fail me.
UTB

what is it they say
unless you suffer the bad , you never appreciate the good
all that panic when we finished 8th in the championship
people then said we were failing
shows they had no real idea of what proper failure is

Its all relative
Chelsea are said to be failing
but qualifying fot the last 16 of the CL means theyll get more money in this season then weve had in our history

Sitters, I think young Darren was a generation removed from me and the Kelsey lads (quite a bit younger). And maybe, how shall we say, not on our wavelength :-)

We (Jordanthorpe) used to hammer you lot every season at school level- home and away !!

Mind you our playing fields were usually shite. Top pitch was like Skeggy beach for most of the season. Used to have no skin on yer knees from one Saturday morning till the next.
