I saw one of the women's sides complaining they were given man city academy stadium which has sold out. Personally the women's game isn't for me but why anyone wants it to fail is weird.

I heard someone on the radio today complaining that the tournament is not being taken seriously by playing games in smaller ground. Surely it’s better to play in smaller grounds and get closer to selling out to create an atmosphere rather than playing at the the biggest ground but they are half/quarter full and then having no atmosphere.

I guess it's a "build it and they might come" type thing. See that tactic work in one off events better than whole tournaments mind.

Barcelona had a gate of 93,000 for a womens match, very impressive.

Well it was impressive until you realise that 40,000 tickets were FOC

At least they turned up.

I remember just before covid Chelsea played a league game at home to Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
They wanted positive publicity by setting an attendance record so made all the tickets free of charge and managed to get rid of 42,000 tickets.

On match day the ground was only roughly half full for an official sell out, so the actual crowd was less than 25,000 and that's when it's free.
Still think it was a Chelsea home attendance record, they game the attendance as fans in attendance not the number of tickets sold.

I think over the next 10-15 years we will see a real growth in the wine a game. To the point where they can make a good living from being a professional footballer.

It will never catch up with mens football.

Not that any of it matters because as soon as they ban heading the ball I’m not watching anymore.

That is the interesting issue regards progression and future commercial viability.

Pre covid in 2020 average gates in the women top flight were around 3,000 (manipulated by having odd matches at 40K stadiums and charging £1)
Therefore at the beginning of this season the FA set a realistic target of hoping to double average gates to 6,000 average by 2024.

This season in the top flight of the women's game has never been more heavily publicised by the media and admission prices are normally only £5 but this season the current average in the top flight have disappointingly decreased down to 2,100.

So believe or not....you could argue that womens football in the UK has stopped growing and is on the slide as a spectator sport....but the media won't post anything negative because it goes against their narrative, even if it's the truth.

so attendances are currently lower than the mens National League (which receives minimal publicity) and currently averages 3,133.
In the women's 2nd tier (where United play) the average attendance is currently 410.

The women's game is currently (correctly) receiving positive discrimination but at what point do normal commercial principles kick in?
Positive discrimination should be to lend a helping hand, to give a kick start/ opportunity....but should it last for ever...and would that be unfair.
If the government decided to take £2 a week out of everyones income to give to the womens game....then would that be a good idea?

My point is unless the women's game is subsidised by the mens game then female players can't make a decent living (income wise).
Interest has grown (a positive) but not to a level where the masses are prepared to pay for it, so there will be commercial hurdles to overcome.

Of course for clubs like Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea the positive image benefits of family inclusive values might ensure it does work out as being commercially viable for the mens branch to financially support the women's branch of a club.

Never been to a women’s game, but may go along to the Switzerland game at the Lane. If nothing else but show there’s support in Sheffield to turn out for these kinds of events. The more we can have in the city and at the Lane, the better. Less likely to happen if nobody turns up.

Unfortunately it isn't a compliment but I've long said the Women's footy is more entertaining than the men's. Basically if you have a shot it's pretty much going in.

If you have an interest in it, fair enough and as a few people have said they're taking their daughters who are in to it which is great to see. The more young lasses they get in to football the more it will grow.

Still for now, it's hilarious to watch.

9 of us going, 3 girls who play footy and parents for a group game and the semi final. I watch all levels of football and enjoy them all and look forward to seeing how my daughter progresses in the game as much as my son, as S64 said above it's a chance to showcase both Sheffield United and Sheffield which is all good with me.
