Adult with time on his hands hears innocent questioning (which possibly never happened) and twists it into a non-story to push his own agendas OR to simply spark up a debate that nobody wants or has ever asked for in order to pull in as many “likes” and “retweets” as possible so as to publicise himself and attract attention.

Not even sure where to start with this, but as it's come from an American writer I'd say it's much less weird than NFL where:

- teams covet the athletic abilities of schoolkids (who perform unpaid in front of crowds of 80,000+ people, on national television)

- said kids have zero choice over where they end up playing when they get drafted

- there are limits on the amount of money you can pay a player when they get drafted, which leads to the absurd situation where some of the best players in the league are also some of the worst-paid

- players have almost zero power in terms of getting a new contract or a move to another team - they're locked into their contract until it runs out or until it's advantageous to their team to get rid of them

- many teams will actively ditch players at the end of their contract because they can just draft a cheaper player

But sure, being able to buy players in soccer is weird
