It brought it home to Megson even more how the Owls had let down their followers - and he is looking for the team to try to atone for that by putting on an improved show against Stevenage at Hillsborough tonight. “It’s really humbling, when you see that kind of commitment,” he said.

“I was talking to one dad with his lad, Jake, who was about seven or eight and decked out in all his Wednesday gear.

“It was a freezing cold day; they’ll have got on the train at about eight in the morning, and would have got home I would imagine at around midnight.”
