I remember my Chesterfield supporting workmates raving about Wilson who was a signing from Bury. watched the league and FA Cup matches between Chesterfield and the Blades at Saltergate in November (league) and December (FA Cup replay) 1980 and for me two Chesterfield players stood out in these games. One was Wilson the hard working and tenacious box to box midfielder and the other was Alan Birch who was a fast and skilful attacking player on the right. We lost both these games. Next time I saw Wilson was in out 3-1 defeat at Saltergate when he was the star player again and scored the 2nd goal with a superb free kick. He was a player that I would have liked to sign but he was destined to play in the top division as he went to Forest, Luton and Wendy (dropping down a division when he signed for them before getting promotion in his first season)
