Willie Carlin

Remember his first match at the Lane when Mick Jones had been sold to Leeds, the club’s directors got a very fierce reception from Kopites who’d paid in the terrace to shout abuse at them. Willie Carlin must have wondered what the hell he’d got into, but he soon became a firm favourite. Very clever, tricky player, not afraid to put his foot in either.

R.I.P. Willie.

Sad news! Great little player. Remember reading that we'd signed him from Carlisle when on my paper round. Saw some great performances from him, notably away at Old TRAFFORD, when he and a teenage TC ran Man U ragged. Also making the Mick Hill goal in the 1-1draw at Hillsborough, plus the celebrations afterwards. Sold dubiously to Brian Clough at Derby, where he helped them to promotion.

RIP Willie, top man!

Great player remember talking to him at Pond Street on his way to railway station after he'd signed for Derby, gutted when he left.

Just before my time, but remember working in Ashbourne with a few Derby fans. One of them a bit older than me said he was very much liked by their fans.

RIP Blade.

He scored the first goal in this debut and we went on to beat Newcastle 2-1

Rowley thought he "got one over Cloughie". Derby went on to win the second division and we finished in 9th place. Carlin was a regular during the promotion season and in the following season that saw Derby finish in 4th place of the first division

There's a great passage in The Damned United about us and Willie Carlin. Something about Clough being "fed up of being bossed by teams like Sheffield United and players like Willie Carlin", so Clough went out and bought him.

Just before my time as a Blade but heard he was a player well liked, (but a bit under valued) by some?.

RIP

Rumours at the time that Arthur Rowley took a backhanded payment from Derby. True or false who knows? But we'd beaten Derby 2-0 at the Lane shortly before the deal. If memory serves me right, I think Willie scored at the kop end.

Was at the game v Derby, our third unbeaten match of the season, when he ran them ragged, in a 2-0 victory for United. Two days later Cloughie signed him.We finished mid table, and Derby went up as Champions.Nothing ever changes, does it?
Rest In Peace, Willie!

Yes I was on the terrace with some pals, we had gone on there to shout some abuse at the Board as said above. Well in the stand was Cloughie and we started giving him some stick, shouting....." lay off our team Cloughie we are not selling to you...".Willie had a great game and unfortunately Cloughie liked him and got him. That run and lay -off at Hillsbro for Mick Hill was superb ., I was at the Leppings Lane End with a few Utd lads and we went barmy.
Great Days- RIP Willie - great lad.

Brilliant player, without exaggerating he was as said above, hard as nails for a little feller but a really good footballer. R.I.P. Willie

Any relation to Cock Fosters or Dick Guinness? 😁

RIP Blade.

Them were the days with no segregation! Pockets of trouble yes but usually in good fun.
Unfortunately about that time real violence kicked in ! Can't be done today as idiots would kill each other.
Still do it in Liverpool it seems!Other cities! Well just dernt do it! No doubt some would end up in hospital with deaths a big risk.
How do they do it in Liverpool ! Respect for each other! Which has been lost elsewhere
I miss the banter of years ago on the terraces!, looks like it's lost forever! Apart from Liverpool it seems !
What a bloody shame.

Willie Carlin was by far the best signing Brian Clough made when he was at Derby.

So many put their success down to Dave Mackay's signing (including the Damned United) but Carlin proved to be the catalyst in securing Derby's promotion in 1968/69.

Conversely our season went into reverse.

RIP.

the september derby 67 at the lane really started things off wednesday fans were lucky to get on and off the shoreham that day

Great little player, him and Hodgson made from the same mould, both could plough through the Bramall Lane mud and were loved by the fans.
RIP Willie.
