Changed the game.

impact player or starter?

i think he needs to start, didnt think mendez tracked back enough. but is willo a winger?

Id be worried about starting him regularly only because of his injury problems.

Thing is, it's clear that DW wants to bring in more players, and that we can't do that without 1 or 2 more being sold. Could it be that the cameo tonight might tempt a Championship club to bid for him, and if so is he worth sacrificing? Despite tonight's heroics, I feel he probably is.

I'd love him to stay. He's a real talent, and far too good for this level. But as already stated, he needs to stay fit (and also to cut out the indiscipline that he's increasingly showing).

On balance, he can go as long as he can be replaced on the cheap. Perhaps his replacement is already at the club?

Let's get rid of the talent and keep the plodding mediocrity.

Oh dear, Oh dear. Do we never learn?

thought Doyle was just as good

its like being in another dimension

i thought doyle played it very clever tonight, came on, played simple balls and kept the ball moving forward. willo was much more important thought i would say BTL purely for that quality finish for the second. either way 2 very good substitutions.

If Willo could do what he did tonight consistently, and not get injured, then obviously he'd be worth keeping. But in the event that nobody buys the players you believe we need to sell instead of him to raise funds, how do you propose DW buys the players he feels we need to improve the team?

I would let Montgomery go on a free transfer. That would free up substantial wage leakage.

Willo and, to my pleasant surprise, Doyle gave a lesson in midfield play tonight. K-Mac was off the pace then injured but will become a major asset. Add the rejuvenated Quinn, D-Mac and Harriott and we are finally well served in the key department of any football team. Apologies to his legions of admirers but he surely has to be the one to go.

OK, the apology isn't genuine!

A fit Williamson would get a start in pretty much any side outside the Premier League. He's a real footballer. Mendez-Laing is fast, tries a few tricks and is really best suited to the bench when he can come on and stretch games.

I also thought Doyle performed well last night and as much as it grates me to say it, him and Monty in the middle worked last night.

This is what competition for places is all about and Williamson is obviously chomping at the bit for a start.

Might be worth starting him on Saturday and using NML as an impact player later on. Danny will know what to do.

I would be interested if Willo can play 90 mins, because if he can he should be starting although I would prefer him in the middle preferably instead of Monty.

There's hope for us all yet. Pinchy and his reconciliation towards Quinn is a revalation. before you know it he'll be saying: Pinchy:heart:Monty.

Personally speaking, Willo deserves his start after last nights performance.

If he does the business, he should be in the team and he did that quite convincingly. No one knows what his injury situation may pan out to be. We're all guessing. His experience and clever play going forward merits his start imho.

Furthermore, no disrespect to young Mendez-Laing, but I haven't seen enough of him to warrant a start. On top of that, I think we have an inbalance. We appear to be quite strong down the left, but very spasmodic down the right. Willo down the right, as seen last night, may just give us a better balance to the team.

Only an opinion.

I just don't like the idea of 4 midfielders starting all of whom prefer to be playing in the middle of the park.

I think we will see them coming inside too much and not giving us the width we require.

One other point from particularly the first half (and the reason I'd drop Monty for Willo). We seem to like looking down the line to our forwards running into channels.
The problem is this pulls them out wide but no one from midfield was breaking into the space created in and around the box. Someone should be pushing on from midfield (as Lampard does for example) to pick up a handful of opportunities for a strike on goal from 12 yards, but no one did.
Dropping Monty and playing McDonald/Willo I would expect at least one of them making these runs.

Shock horror! Danny Wilson actually knows what he's doing. He's a decent manager at this level.

i can hear the pennies dropping all over Sheffield.

The only issue with this pairing is that Walsall were tearing through our midfield last night as if it were made of wet tissue paper, I can't see Williamson doing much to improve that.

'cos Monty did loads in the first 50 mins :D

I think Williamson actually puts himself about quite a lot and McDonald/Doyle could play deeper, the problem with Monty is that he is one dimensional.
He breaks up play, but then what?

I'm not advocating playing Monty in front of Williamson, I'm just concerned that that midfield may be a bit soft. I doubt we'll see MacDonald through himself in front of many shots like we needed someone to last night. If Walsall had a player who could hit them from 18-20 yards, we'd have conceded a hatful.

You're right Williamson does get stuck in, but his disciplinary record shows that he may not be too good at it. In deference to Pinchy, I'm not saying I want him or MacDonald to just throw themselves about and run around, but nor do I want to see the Blades get sliced open quite as much as they did in the first galf last night.

I'd even be tempted to play Doyle if he keeps playing as he did last night. A revelation when he came on, I thought.

>He breaks up play, but then what?
yes ours.. as often as theirs.. we are best off playing a high tempo style which is wrecked if it goes through monty .. it goes like this.. pass.. move.. pass .. move.. pass .. move .. pass to monty.. miscontrol.. chase ball.. tackle.. win ball back or random ricochet.. miscontrol.. chase ball.. start again, opposition now reset.. opportunity lost.

This is getting worryingly like a sensible non-polarised, non-partisan discussion about our midfield. I am a fully-fledged Quinn fan Boo! It was Elpiton I couldn't stand but happily he's gone to stay at the Kevin Blackwell Sanctuary for Unwanted Hoofers. Another surprise. I thought Monty did OK last night.

I want to see Willo at CM where he can dictate. My preferred partner would be K-Mac if fully fit, though Doyle really gave food for thought last night.

Wide left, it has to be The Mighty Quinn. That leaves wide right up for grabs. I hate playing lads out of position so I'll resist going for D-Mac. I look forward to seeing Flynn when fit and on form. NML seems more potential than substance so far.

I must confess to letting out a slight boo when Doyle came on last night (i stand ashamed) but i have to admit he was great and had a real impact on the game and I have never been so pleased to eat my words. the fightback was nothing short of sensational and 16000 blades blew the roof off the Lane.
What a night.

Second that Brampton. Great night and great entertainment. Never thought we were out of it even when we nearly went 3 down. Lots to worry about though and the midfield choices are critical in the way we're playing the game. Oh yes, and tightening up the back four.
