Sheffield United
DERBY hero Lee Williamson has pledged to play anywhere in the Sheffield United line-up.
The Derby-born midfielder curled in a fortuitous 60th-minute free-kick to salvage a 1-1 draw for Kevin Blackwell's side in the 125th Steel City derby on Sunday.
It was Williamson's fourth of the campaign and his first since his equaliser against Derby in February.
Having been hampered by injuries since arriving from Watford last summer, Williamson has been restricted to just 14 league starts. He was recalled on the right-flank against the Owls in place of Glen Little, who was not fit to start due to a calf problem.
Williamson hopes he has done enough to stay in Blackwell's team for the final two matches of the season.
He told The Star: "Right wing is not my preferred position but I, like the majority of players, will play anywhere to be in the team.
"My ideal position is in the centre but if the gaffer asks me to play on the right then I will."
Former Rotherham player Williamson said the players were frustrated they did not complete the double over their arch neighbours, having dominated long periods. "We were disappointed we didn't go on to win it, especially in the second-half as the game opened up and we should have got three points," he said. "We had plenty of chances. We got one goal but weren't clinical enough to get the second."
Williamson enjoyed the passion and intensity of his first ever experience of the Steel City derby.
"I don't think I have played in a bigger derby," he said. "It was a mad arena out there with all the fans getting behind you. It was a good experience. I've played in derbies before but not as big as this."
Despite being switched from the left-flank into the centre after the re-start, Stephen Quinn shone like a beacon for United.
His workrate added the spark Blackwell's men required to stage their second-half recovery.
Williamson said: "Stephen played really well. He has great fitness levels and is composed on the ball which helps us out a lot."
Asked whether he thought Wednesday would maintain their Championship status, the 27-year-old added: "I'm not sure they will get out of the mess they are in. They are depending on other results; it's not all in their court."
United have extended their season ticket renewal deadline until the end of the season. Season ticket holders can renew up until May 4. Season tickets for the 2010/11 campaign are on sale.

Well let's not pretend he was having a shot ;)

Good lad!

Fortuitous or not it would have been a crime if we hadn't got at least a point, not forgetting they scored against ten when it should have been ten each.

Yes it is. If the Pigs win both games (God forbid) they are certain to stay up.

I liked the way Willo described it. Its the correct way to hit a freekick against a crap team. If you put it in with pace and into the back post, the keeper has to back peddle.

I don't think he intended it as a 'premeditated' shot, but he knew that if he was direct enough then there was always a chance that someone could get a nod on it and stick it in the onion bag.
