First of all I want to say I was massively impressed with Hanson's debut. He won the majority of his battles, was a nuisance for the opposition defence and grabbed himself a well earned goal.

What I am wondering is can this player have the same impact for us that Rickie Lambert had for Southampton and Grant Holt had for Norwich. The signing has similarities - all are physically big players, only had lower league success, were making a move to the big favourite in the division and had good goal scoring records at the club they were leaving.

Holt & Lambert played a massive part in helping their clubs earn back to back promotions, they both proved their quality in the Championship and beyond.

Very early days I know.. but if first impressions are anything to go by then maybe Hanson could turn out to be our very own version and a shrewd bit of business.

Don't think he's got the technical abilities those two had.

He'll help get us up. Let's take it from there.

Liked Holt. Proper centre forward, won battles, not exactly lightning quick but wouldn't be bullied and would put his head where most feared. We should have had him at BDTBL yonks ago.

4 in the first half of the season for Bradford would suggest there may be a slight gap in comparison!

Lambert is more like Billy than Hanson is play and stature .

Hanson is a bit like Holt , although Hanson ain't got a good scoring record at all .

It's a team game at the Lane , every player has to prove there quality now and in the future short , medium , long term.

Promotion will be achieved with everybody pulling there weight , including Clarke .

Anyway all are , or can be match winners .

He's so unorthodox that he can make a positive contribution at any level. Particularly from the bench when we have a team pinned back. I wouldn't see him as a regular starter above L1 level.

He'll get the service here
I'd like to think that this will be the case but haven't really seen any evidence in the first half of the season that it will be. Our final balls haven't been good enough, particularly crosses, but let's hope that changes now that they have something to aim for.

We've missed a lot of chances this season to wrap up games.

theres a resurgence throughout football in big lumps up front
ibrahimovic , carroll shane long lukaku etc
theres proof that hoof is the way to go
non of that tippy tappy crap

excite the fans gerrit in box,if you dont speculate you wont accumulate
plus is there a more majestic sight than a bullet header from 6 yards out

IIRC Holt's technical abilities were mainly falling down in front of the ref and fighting. He made Darius Henderson look like a pacifist and was one of the most annoying opposition players I have had the misfortune to watch (A shout out to Darren Huckerby, Mark Bircham, Mark Ward, Shefqi Pig, Stevie Diver, etc etc etc).

Don't have a problem with Lambert, but as others have said, he was a far more cultured player than your tradditional big lad up front.

A bullet header from 10 yards or even15 yards?

I would say that Lambert is far better technically than Hanson. Holt is probably a more realistic comparison although I’d still say Holt is probably more of a goalscorer. If Hanson starts regularly, I seem him doing a Shipperly type role, leading the line and providing a platform for others to thrive rather than being the headline grabber as those two were.

Hmmm........think Hanson is going to divide opinion.

he doesn't run like a footballer - seems very awkward.

He'll do a job though as he seems to time his jumps quite well - we just need to give him service.

What I really liked about his goal on Saturday - he actually creatd his "own space" for Freeman to pass to him with good movement. Now that means he was at least thinking quickly instead of ball watching.

If nothing else it will make Lavery step up (as he did when he came on).

It's all about competition for me - same with Duffy and Carruthers.

I am wondering where O'Shea fits into all of this?

Agreed, although Shane Long a big lump? He's 2 ft 3 and 8 stone......

Hanson. A player who has plied his trade at non league and L1 & L2 level all his career.

And Rickie Lambert, ex England International and Liverpool player.

Give the guy a fucking chance FFS !!

He's an upgrade on Sammon and Higdon, let's leave it there for now !!!!

Rickie Lambert plied his trade in L1 & L2 prior to his move to Southampton.

I'm certainly not saying James Hanson will go on to play for Liverpool & England, what I am saying though is that I believe he will have the same impact for us that Lambert had for Southampton when they were in League 1 & The Championship.

If we get promoted I think he will cause defenders in the league above just as much trouble.

All predictions & opinions at this stage.. I'm heading down to Peterborough today to hopefully see more of the same from the big lad

Thats a very interesting observation and reminds me of the comments in the Alex Ferguson biography about Andy Carroll and that ManUre didn't buy him as their 'experts' (analysis of him) said that he had a strange running style and this would mean he would be injury prone! (Well they got that one right!)
I've paraphrased here as it's a while since I read the book, but you get the jist.

I didn't notice anything unusual about Hanson last Saturday other than he won loads of headers, scored a great goal and 'put in a shift' so for me looks a great signing!

Sir Jumpsalot was massively overrated based on one game last week (even I've given him a knighthood) and he looked far better with the ball at his feet than going for headers all the time, many of which he got nowhere close to winning. Porter and Higdon played that well occasionally, so it's a bit early to rave about him the way some people are. He had a solid debut with some promising signs and hopefully continues that for the rest of the season.

I think the point was that at the time Saints signed Lambert, he had only played non-league and lower league all his career before spearheading them to back to back promotions. But Hanson is not the same kind of player. He's a foil for others to thrive whereas Lambert has always been a goalscorer.

I thought it was Jordan Henderson that he said that about?
