Wilders worst trait

JL94x4 My last on this because I think you’ve suffered enough following your initial knee jerk comments.

Option A - Knill: are going 4-5-1 and sit in? Wilder: Are we fuck

Option B - the JL94x4. Lets bring on some defensive midfielders and go one up top.

I’m 100% Option A. Everytime.

The reason we’ve gone from bottom of league one to 5th in the premier league is by taking bold risks.

Sure we could sit in, but if we’re going to lose I want us to die trying to win.

I want to applaud the side off for going for it and not boo them for failing to hold it.

My slight criticism this season is that we’ve sometimes tried to close games out too early, West Ham was one game where I thought we could’ve pushed more at the end.

I partially agree with the OP that Wilder's worst trait has been his substitutions. However not for some time and not in this game. He has thankfully abandoned the "Substitutions for Dummies" manual he used to use and doesn't change shape unless necessary. My only comment would be that I think Sharp for Moose would have been better to keep the press going. McBurnie isn't built for that type of game. He lollops up to a defender giving them more time, whilst Sharp makes a beeline for them at speed.
What a condescending comment to make about a manager who’s won three promotions in four seasons.

Tongue in cheek (as in Windows for Dummies etc). He's no worse than others, but he did have a tendency to follow the established line as advocated by the OP which was stick a defensive midfielder on or another defender, or withdraw to a one up front and invite pressure when we were winning. It was "playing it by the book" and as many posters have maintained over four years, sometimes it has backfired. Now he likes to maintain the structure and chose the player for the job. Perhaps it's that he now has the players to do the job.

As for three promotions in four years. Yes magnificent and probably now higher in my estimation than Harris. Never felt better as a Blade and deserves huge plaudits and praise, but equally I can have an opinion. I can tell you now that he certainly does and expresses it forcefully but equally can admit when he's wrong which seems to be fortunately very rare.

I think some comments towards JL94x4 are slightly out of order, no need to get personal and insult him he's staying his opinion (which I actually disagree with).

Anyhow, it seems to me as a manager unless your subs go on and do something amazing you're in line for criticism. I can think of many times where we have brought on defender to see off a game and it's gone tits up... Villa 3-0 Martin Cranie anyone?

I disagree. His subs in L1 were nearly always right. He had a very good squad for a L1 side. Less so in the championship as his options were more limited. Even then, he was right more than wrong. Not every substitution has a successful outcome.

Strikes me as a real 'first world problem' thread, this one.

I've been watching United since 1970 and can't remember a manager with a more positive attitude to subs. He's acknowledged he's been too gung-ho occasionally (eg v Fulham 4-5 in 2017) but generally these have paid off. Just think Brentford at home last year when we only had 10 men and he put Billy on to nick a second goal.

Off the top of my head, I'd say his substitutions work 70-80% of the time, which is far more than the like of Warnock or even Basset.

That's fine, we disagree. I also accept that as in my former employment such things are judgment calls on the day at the time which are sometimes wrong. I just think he's got better. I've not moaned as much. ☺ If at all actually.🤔

Wilders worst trait....h'mmmmm, emptying the offy of Peroni and Moretti....greedy git.......

to be fair it's much much easier to get it right bringing on a championship quality player or 2 when we are playing Northampton or Shrewsbury
than bringing on a championship player or 2 v man utd

Agree with that mate, and it's all part of the bigger picture that has brought this club to the top of the Premier Division. We're here on merit, there's no fluke in what we're doing. Wilder has built a team, evidenced by Sunday's display, that is technically good, we play at a fast pace, our passing is swift and accurate, and we now have a forward in Moose who is fast, robust, different, and offers himself without hiding. What a fucking team!

Exactly the point I was trying to make. We could take the piss in L1 and under Wilder we frequently did. We don’t have the best squad in the league any more so it’s much more difficult and therefore a much greater chance of a sub not working out.

That's a hypothetical situation and not realistic in this discussion..

We were 2-0 up, brought 2 strikers on and went 3-2 down.. I'm confident that we bring a besic or Osborn on we win that game and dont concede 3.

You created the hypothesis by saying he should have brought on a midfielder and held on. If you don't want to be challenged don't post something controversial. I can understand why you often get called pig on the wind up.

I think Robinson would have been a better change for Moose. That said Sharp does probably press more than Robbo would but Robbo has more pace than Sharp. 🤷‍♂️

Very true. But still in future I'd like us to try seeing out games, these are the games you look back on at the end of the season if things dont work out good.

Luckily villa last season turned out to be a blessing, so maybe that will happen again.
But we have tried in the past with mixed results, so going defensive hasn't really worked any better than keeping a good shape

Man U tried it in the game on sunday and failed. The reality of Sunday, as called out by Wilder is Man Utd changed shape and started taking big gambles. With the quality on show (James and Rashford primarily) it came off big time for them. Then they went defensive, invited us on and paid the price.

So let me get this right . Some are arguing Wilder that in league one Wilder got some substitutions wrong. In a season we won the title. And got 100 points. How very careless of our Chris.

Have you watched United over the last 3 years? We can't stick a defender on and keep it tight, just can't do it. We've tried and we always concede.

Contrast that to Brentford last season, getting pushed back with 10 men, put a striker on and we push on and get another.

Best form of defence is attack for us, always has been under Wilder.

As well as an overall excellent display that last goal really illustrated what we’re about.
Instead of collapsing we put together about a dozen zipped passes and pulled Man U apart again.
This team has confidence in bucketloads.

havent we lost one away game in 12 months
didnt we have the most clean sheets in the championship

we ALWAYS concede, bit over blown comment compared to reality

Thought I would share this on goals and assists from the bench so far this season...

In fairness to the OP and JL94x4 he was bemoaning Wilders rubbish substitutions and their inability to be able to close a game out for a positive position.

A great example of this awful trait being addressed by Wilder following this mid game angry thread posted by the OP against Man U was on Sunday v Wolves. Wilder waited until Wolves had equalised and then brought on the positive subs to close out the game by trying to win the game...

Result, same.

What a load of bollocks.
Chris has got us in the premier league...were would we be without him.
Still in league one...
