CW refers to the (to me illogical) fact that the window doesn't close till 3 weeks after the season starts.
He alludes to there being a reason for this but doesn't say what it is.

Does anyone know whether there is an official reason for why the window extends into the season - to me it just causes a lot of uncertainty when managers are trying to get their teams organised - has there ever been a call to end the window when the season starts ?

I think it's so roughly most european leagues are the same. Spain and Italy used to start a few weeks after us. now we all seem to start roughly the same time.

Also allows higher level teams to better evaluate their squads and decide to let lads out on loan. Used to have lads playing in reserves/u21s who needed to be out playing meaningful football

Maybe there's an argument to stop actual transfers before the season starts but allow loans till end of August.
At least we could start the season knowing that we wouldn't suddenly lose our best players.
