I have read today a very interesting article by Matthew Syed in the Times sport section which in part made me think of why the 'Wilder style of management' is so successful.
I quote a section of the article -
'The All Blacks have an ethic both of individual excellence and team subservience. Manchester City under Pep Guardiola are also striking in this regard, with self interest thriving within a tapestry of interdependence. Players are conscious of team mates in superior positions and so willingly square the ball rather than shooting'
McGoldrick's winner on Saturday was celebrated wildly by its creator Duffy as much as if he had scored the goal himself. The whole 'group ethic' which Wilder preaches so heavily makes our players worth so much more as a whole than 11 individuals who are more interested in their own glory over the success of the 'TEAM' e.g, Villa, or Stoke are just two striking examples of the way NOT to go.
The Ryder Cup this weekend was another great example of a team of less fancied players who gelled and then massively out performing their much more fancied opponents by sticking together and playing well
Our boys at BDTBL have clearly have bought into this ethic big style with many of the players playing some of the best football of their careers at a level many had said they would never see e.g. Duffy, Fleck, Freeman, Basham.
Long may it continue as it is great to see Duff, Billy, Bash et al showing the way to the money spunkers !!
