Enemies Enhance the Meaning of Life
Life isn't meaningless when you have enemies!

Decades ago, the sociologist Georg Simmel argued that nothing unites a nation, or any group of people for that matter, quite like having a common enemy. Recent research by Mark Landau (professor of psychology, University of Kansas), though not testing unity of groups, does indicate that having enemies provides some psychological benefits.

Specifically, Landau and colleagues argue that people have a basic need for coherence, or for things to make sense. Enemies provide people with this sense of coherence. If we can attribute many of the ills in our lives to our enemies, then we have a stable set of schemas and expectations. We know what to expect, even if something bad happens, and we know who to attribute it to.

Several studies support these ideas. In one study, participants who were lead to think about chaotic hazards were more likely to perceive people with different political beliefs as enemies (view them as more part of a conspiracy).

Interestingly, in another study, people who had just imagined a powerful enemy (Al-Qaeda) actually thought the world was less dangerous and chaotic.

Put differently, this research suggests that people create enemies in order to maintain a stable, coherent, clear view of the world. This is because they can attribute the negatives of the world (which are inevitable) to these enemies.

Having enemies even appears to make people feel, ironically, safer.

Now, to be clear, I am not encouraging people to have enemies. There are obvious drawbacks to having enemies too. And there are other ways to find life meaningful and coherent than to have enemies.

Do you have enemies because you have been harmed by them or vehemently disagree with them on some moral, political or religious view? Perhaps. But, you also possibly have enemies because you created them in order for your life to be more meaningful.

I think it’s called a husband!

Frosty again with him in his most recent interview.

Did Mike steal his crate of Peroni? or did Wilder just not fancy being interviewed?

Seem to remember it all started when McCarthy questioned Wilder starting Lundstram, because of the 'if Lunny plays we lose' narrative that popped up last season. It's never recovered.

We know how it started but I think Mike has even eaten his humble pie on Lundstram. I would have thought Wilder may have moved on from it.

I assumed Wilder must have overheard him insulting his missus or something.

If that's all it's about then maybe Wilder needs to grow up a bit.

There probably is more to it. Others at RS have said similar stuff to Wilder and not been given the frosty treatment.

Wilder was getting asked some daft questions from the national press the other day and laughed it off.

He needs to know how to move on. He clearly says he doesn't follow every aspect of the academy and suggests he doesn't know much about the particular line of questioning, he then fire 4 more questions on the same topic!?!?

Feel uncomfortable, he needs to listen to answers and read the way to interview is going!

Anyone know why Wilder hates talking to BBC radio Sheffield's Mike McCarthy? It's quite obvious and doesn't make for great interviews, Wilder finds fault in every question and disagrees with him constantly. Just wondered if there was bad blood between them or a specific a reason?
Perhaps wilders a communist and he's got the fella mixed up with someone else.

Wasn't his first question a daft one about the new youth player we have just signed? And Wilder is like, this is soposed to be a pre press conference about the Sunderland game. And then it went a bit down hill from there

Always seems to go down hill when Mike does the interview.

Yeh that's what I thought in this one, Wilder tried to steer it back and just said "you'd have the to ask the academy manager on that one" but then got another set of questions about the youth policy, which he handled quite patiently considering.

I think the guy doesn't help himself, though he did do a nice TLDR job summarising the court case ruling in bite size chunks on twitter.

Agree Ricki ! Wilder from the off was very short with him he tries very hard to do his job but there is definitely an undercurrent there for some reason ..
Isn't he from Leicester maybe a Leicester fan but that really shouldn't be a problem.
Could be from his time at Northampton which is not that far from Leicester.
Definitely something as Wilder doesn't really try to hide his feelings regarding McCarthy.
He does ask some niev questions but that shouldnt be held against him.
Wilder seems to get on with everyone apart from him,

Just awkward isn’t it. Think Wilder has a lot more patience than last season to be fair, but you can see why he gets annoyed by his left field questions and inability to respond to the answers he’s given.

I admire McCarthys persistence but his interviews with Wilder are cringeworthy,it may be a good idea to let Alan Knill do them in future.

It seems like a vicious circle to me, Wilder responded in a closed and frosty manner to one of the opening questions which McC tried to evoke discussion around, it was a completely valid question but probably not asked in the best ways (Wilder only answering 'Yes'), in turn then it set the tone for the whole interview, I do think Wilder is at fault somewhat.

Seems like Wilder goes into the interview unhappy and expecting some shit questioning which makes him frosty, and then in turn that understandably makes McCarthy more nervous and probably treading on eggshells, which then makes his questioning shit, which then Wilder gets more annoyed with, which sets a horrible and awkward tone for the conversation.

At the end of the day do what is best for the fans and Radio Sheffield listeners, it is just horrifically awkward to listen to.

Compleyely agree.

Getting a bit daft now, the difference in tone to how he responds to MM compared to other journalists.
If it is all due to the I'll advised Lundstram question in their first interview then Wilder needs to move on and give the lad a break.
Maybe something else has gone off, but still, it's all very awkward at times and I feel quite sorry for MM in this.

He's from Sheffield. We're all like that time to time. It's immature and stupid, but we're all guilty of it. It's something thats ingrained in the psyche.

I'm glad I'm not alone in this. It's really not a good look for Wilder. I think there must have been some strong words off after the interview in which McCarthy made his ill-judged Lundstram comments.

Either way, something should give. Either Radio Sheff stop sending the kid to interview Wilder or Wilder buries the hatchet. It's become cringeworthy.

Gids makes the interview very conversational, probably only asks a handful of questions per interview whereas it feels MM seems to get through reams of empty questions jumping from one topic to the next

It was with that very principal Herb Brooks used with his team in the 1980 winter Olympics, which was better known as Miracle on Ice, Brooks made him self Universally in the Point of the Enemy, which united the team and got the win against the "Unbeatable Russian Machine"
