Wilder to Watford

I’m not sure they’re as idiotic as they seem. They’ve spent good money and had very decent spells in the top flight. Their recruitment must have been decent, and there must be a degree of continuity above the managerial role.

At United we seem to have had owners whose football strategy is to pick a manager and let him run the show. That’s also a form of idiocy to my mind.
Agreed

Our board should have interfered with Hecky and stopped this awful promotion season and Wembley return - they should hang their heads

Sucess at any club in the champ is defined by how many years they have had in the prem 6 in 8 for watford

They love to sack a manager but they love to stay in the prem even more which they have

Why would you persist with a manager you know isnt good enough

I hope dozy is more like the pozzos as an owner than one who accepts the average

Watford need to win their next 3 on the bounce, otherwise the game would already be up for him before the end of March.

Even if they did that, they've then got Luton (A), Huddersfield (H) and Coventry (A), which they'd probably need to win all of them. That would be 18 points in 6 games; an average of 3 points a game. Over the last 10, they're on 1.4 points a game, and over the last 5 it's 1.2.

Seven wins and four draws would represent a miraculous turnaround in form, and would give Watford 76 points, which will probably not be enough.

“I’ve signed to the end of the season, and I’d like our season to be ending by me walking up the steps at Wembley to get a trophy.

“One thing to remember is that 11 games is very nearly a quarter of a season. People will look at the top two and think it’s done and dusted. I think top spot is, but not second place.”

So he thinks second spot is still available but he‘d prefer not to get it..?

I presume he means that we're not nailed on for second, not that Watford can make it?

For Watford to make second, they have 11 games to make up 1 point on Coventry, 3 on Millwall, 4 on Norwich, 6 on Luton, 7 on Blackburn, 9 on Middlesbrough and 16 on us!

Why did he feel the need to mention it then if it’s of no concern to him?

First game in charge. Away to Gareth Ainsworth.

Squad in terms of quality is better than Boro.

Squad in terms of fighting for the cause, is probably the worst in the league.

He'll either get those prima donnas in line and they'll be excellent.

Or...... They'll turn against him worse than any club he's been at previously and completely fall apart.

Interesting to see which way it goes.

Notice he mentioned the xG of Boro.

Good old xG.

The silver lining to many a failing manager!

He did a wonderful job for us, of that, there’s no doubt. The point here is that he may have some skills but and attributes but being particularly bright ain’t one of them. Whenever he’s been interviewed or appeared as a a pundit I always find him cliched and something of a dunce.

This, I interpreted that comment as a snide cheap shot at us

Managing Watford puts you in that I don't care anymore list, it's a short-term job on a long-term contract meaning great returns for minimal input. I'm very surprised he's gone there tbh id have said that it would be the polar opposite of what he thinks he stands for (thats me assuming without knowing him) as long as it has zero negative effect on us then good luck to him.

Wilder at his best here. He knows he’s out, there’s no bitterness or veiled blame, just brutal honesty.

No I in team.

But hard to take wilder 100% serious with this after his antics looking to jump ship at boro after about 10 minutes after joining when there was a sniff of the PL. You Can’t preach team and loyalty when not showing it yourself.

Don’t get me wrong I like wilder and what he achieved here was magnificent . But Wasn’t surprised when it fell apart at boro after that.

He isn't wrong in what he says there but anyone could have told him that before he even took the job.

I think that move to Watford was 100% about money and less about actually trying to remain at Watford long term. Maybe he thought he could come in and wing it with the talent they do have in that squad but just look how many managers they go through.

Utter embarrassment- he’s destined for L1 at best. Pockets full of cash and now deluded. He managed one team through the leagues but, forget the surprise season, crashed and burned when it came to playing with the big boys.
Sorry Chris, but you’re beginning to sound and look like the sad divorcee who starves herself and posts vids on tik-tok showing how fit she really is……..

Yes - a shocking manager.

Apart from getting Oxford promoted to the Football League, saving Northampton from near-certain relegation, winning League Two with Northampton the following season with 99 points, winning League One with United with 100 points, getting promoted to the Premiership with a team full of castoffs, finishing 9th in the Premier League with the smallest wage budget in the league and almost single-handedly transforming our entire club, what has he ever actually done?

They play well for 15 minutes and then teamwork goes out of the window and they ship 3 goals.
Whose job would it be to spot that and rectify it?

Mixed bag of responses there.

Alot of fans agreeing culture isn't great at Watford which seems plainly clear.

But alot of fans also pointing out he said the same about players at Boro and specifically about Akpom not being up to it... And look what Carricks done.

Hi Stegosaurus here,

Wilder breaths very heavily after every sentence and it's very annoying. I hope now I've brought it up, you all notice it too.

The multi national and ever changing nature of Watfords squad does them no favours. Still a laughable underachievement this season based on their talent

Problem is, you might be able to hook players off and replace them, but it sounds like you'd be replacing like for like. They need a clear out. Keep the team players, have one or two mavericks, and swap the rest.

We've all played a bit of footie, and I bet we've all been in a side where some are pulling their weight, doing daft shit etc. You have a go but it goes in one ear and out the other.

Watford players obviously don't give a shit what the manager says, as they'll be another one through the door in a couple of weeks. It's been like that for years. Blame lies with the owners on that one.

Crashed and burned = finished 9th

Great to hear him with the fire in his belly again.

Let’s see if Hecky can get us into European contention next year - if so he’ll be up there with legendary managers like CW, NW, DB etc.
