It's going to be tough for us without him. It's a good opportunity for someone at the club to prove themselves, but I think this lack of depth is the difference between us and other sides established in the Championship. Hardly surprising given we've only just come up to this division. Still, we pushed on tonight for a very comfortable win overall and we're way ahead of where we were expected to be. We'll find out Tuesday night what we can do without him.

With the greatest of respect to Simon Webster, he’s not Paul Coutts.

No doubt in my mind our MVP.

Gutted.

UTB
Apologies wasn’t suggesting that for a second but in his way Webster was integral to our system under DB. Just don’t want us to think it’s over. UTB.

Think if Baldock is back then maybe Bash could move into the middle. He's not Coutts I know but he may protect the back 3 better than Lundstrum while having the same height advantage as Lundstrum.

We are really goint to miss Coutts and maybe a renewed bid for Leonard is a certainty now.

Best of luck Couttsy

Good point re Basham; he deserves the chance.

Sorry to hear about Paul's serious injury . The Webster situation was different, in that Bassett was immediately able to dip int0 the transfer market

WE ARE FUCKING DOOMED! DEM BASTARD GODS WOKE UP

Cracking interview again, despite the injury to Coutts.

I love the “We’re front runners” statement. He loves to be in front - he’s been top of his leagues from Christmas without being shifted for the last 2 seasons. This year we do it for Couttsy and next year we do it for real.

Magic Fucking Magic

Basham's gonna replace Coutts ? Don't be daft. Receive the ball in any awkward way , under any kind of pressure , control and keep it and recycle it ? Basham ? Don't make me laugh.

People aren't expecting a like-for-like replacement in Bash. No one at the club is a like-for-like replacement and no one is suggesting they are.

But, whilst being a huge blow, we have just gone top of the league, we've come through injuries to key players already and we will do again, it ain't season over.

Surely the person to step up is Lundstram? For me he has been bang average this season, but it's an unbelievable opportunity for him to step up now.

Coutts drops deep to get it off the back three, passes it quickly with either foot, follows his pass gets it back and passes it again. He may give it away...3 times a game with those being longer passes. Anything up to 20 yards he rarely misses the target.
He can receive the ball while man marked, take a touch clear of his man into Space and retain possession.
The only player we have close to doing that is Fleck. I love Bash but he cannot do the job Coutts does, nor can lundstram or Samir as their passing touch and vision isn’t close to the same level.

If we are looking to replace we need a new player....and a fucking expensive one at that I would wager

The man is immense but god you could hear the emotion in his voice. He knows more than any of us what Coutts brings to the team/squad.

I trust Wilder/ Knill but basham? We have moved on, notin a million yesrs will the bash replace coutts, I am still hoping for positive news regarding coutts, if, big if coutts is out for the rest of the season, I expext a straight replacement, Mcdonald?

The Gods have indeed woken up and given the Messiah a dig in the ribs.
But if there was ever a manager to overcome the cruel blow inflicted on Coutts tonight , it's CW.
He has to make do & mend till the end of the year.
But the flip side of the coin is that he can promise any incoming quality midfielder a starting place.
So IF McCabe backs us , we can sort out a Coutts replacement for 1st January.
No chance of CW fannying abart. He knows he won't keep winning without a Coutts.
Do the owners ambitions match the manager's ?

"We're front runners" are we Tufty? There's only one serial front runner - and he's getting better year by year:-

Wilder won't sign any player who demands a sure starting place

It’s a terrible blow. Reminiscent when we lost Dane Whitehouse to a terrible tackle by Port Vale’s Ainsworth. But we are United, we regroup and trust in Tufty and Knill. Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected United to be in the position that they are today. My heart goes out to Couttsy and his family.

Ok , promise is a but strong , but with Courts Fleck & Duffy fit , no incoming MF would have much chance of starting. At least in the present circs , a ball-holder would be more tempted to come. (Ooh , err , missus).

No-one else at the club can play the scrum half role like Coutts but that doesn't mean we have to stop playing football.

The one positive is that the management have nearly 2 months to decide if anyone in the current squad can be the key replacement, otherwise the window gets used.

It's a blow but bad injuries are part of football, its why you have good size squads. There wont be excuses from Wilder.

That's a good comparison. I was trying to think of a similar injury blow which generated such a shock. My only thought, though not injury related, was when Ched got sent down. Whitehouse is a similar circumstance.

Though i think the resilience in this squad and management team is better than any before.
