They are in the position they are in because they spent beyond their means is what my point is. The same with Stoke they had to have a fire sale and are further away from coming back to the premier league than they have ever been. Again down to going mental with finances without the billionaire backer.

The facts are simple without substantial investment we are either going to bounce between leagues or fight relegation every season.

Thats a big question for me, and different fans will have a different answer.

Would it be great to see us lift the FA Cup? Of course it would! But take a look at Wigan and Portsmouth. Of what significance is it to either of them now, other than it being a quiz question. That was a height that both clubs may never see again. A victory no doubt at the time, but maybe a Pyrrhic one.

Also note that It took them 5 seasons of spending in the Championship to get to the Premier League. Currently we’ve had 2 season in that league under our current owner without the funding or the free upgraded stadia.
So even using that ridiculous example we’re ahead of schedule in our long term development.

The chance of a generation was early to mid 70's, linked with some players but couldn't or wouldn't afford them.
We also had in John Harris (and his scouts) somebody with a knack for unearthing good players for nowt, and we usually nurtured a good number from our junior teams.
Building a team around TC. Photo in the Star still gives me nightmares.
Similar opportunity with Dave Bassett.
Think it's wise to keep our peace and watch what unfolds over the next two years.

Unfortunately, I agree, Sheffield is a pessimistic city, with good reason given the economic catastrophes of the last 40 years. I only come back for football and it's a shame how rundown it is, especially in the centre, compared to other cities. God, even Birmingham has a positive vibe to it nowadays but not Sheffield. With no industry we are reliant upon the student population for driving a service industry economy, yet we're one of the biggest cities in the UK. We'll never be a Leeds with their banking, insurance, etc. but we should be doing better.

I'm proud of being born in Sheffield and love showing my kids around when we come up but I'm embarrassed and angry at the differences with other cities and even other towns. The lack of prosperity has an impact and I think 'Sheffielders' are generally a more negative bunch than others. It was nice to briefly have a team to be proud of, but even that has gone. That said neither team saw any of that level of money.it's no wonder most now are accustomed to well intentioned people without the support or nouse to kick on when the opportunity arises.

My parents remember how the east end of Sheffield was lit during the evenings by the glare of the furnaces. Without being melodramatic as those lights dimmed and were extinguished during the seventies and eighties, so was Sheffield's economic ascendancy in the UK. True, never a direct link between commercial activity and the clubs but Sheffield was an attractive city to live in. What's there now, isn't it a medium sized shopping centre, which is already looking rather dated? The irony is of course and I know from experience, that living in Sheffield is great, due to the infectious normality of the people, but the perception to the outside world is so different. My wife, in laws and extended family are Norwegian and were amazed that Berge chose us in the first place. True, it's their ignorance of Sheffield perhaps, but to them there are many other better options in the UK.

You are right, Sheffield has a "cloth cap" mentality, even outside of Sheffield it has the same image, it needs to change, but only by attracting "high end" retailers and the good people of Sheffield supporting them, only then will our (both) football teams compete with Manchester & Liverpool - London and the south in general will always win out over the northern cities, Maupay for instance didn't want to come north, hence Brighton got him, and why wouldn't you? Eddie Howes wife hated Burnley (no surprise really if you have ever been to Burnley) so off he went back to Bournemouth . It's the way it is and only the Town Hall can change that image with quality buildings/housing - and that my friend is where it all stops!!

I can remember way back in the long ago a guy called Eric Taylor trying to do all that kinda stuff wi Wendy. and it actually worked , for a while.
but look where they are now.
Sheffield has never been a money magnet , oh they've tried but it's not long before the money runs out.
We are a city (village) that was built on and has always believed in honesty, trust and hard graft , the whole of south Yorkshire is the same.

I think it was one of those framed as "in a deal worth" sort of deals. Maybe targets hit (we should be safe on that one), International appearances (ditto) and I did hear that we waived part or all of any potential Brooks sell on, but that last bit is just rumour. Considerably nearer £10m than £18m initially.

Isn't that what we're trying to do by buying 22 year old prospects?
The difference with Leicester and ourselves is they could afford to be picking the best young players coming through the leagues like Maddison paying a large fee, but then turning them into Premier League regulars, and selling for a nice profit as the market and average player costs grow.
The reason it's not relevant to us is when they were doing it no one else in the Premier League really was, and it's very similar to what we were trying to do last season.
The problem now is there are 4-5 other teams, all with significantly bigger wallets than us fishing in this pond. Our first season Villa weren't interested but now they are, so are West Ham, Brighton, Palace all of whom up until this season we mainly looking abroad.

As anyone with half a brain can work out, when they're talking about Burnley they are looking at building the infrastructure around the club to enable it to compete that this level with clubs with deeper pockets. To take a relegation if necessary but due to sensible planning to continue to build the club so that at some point you have everything in place to compete. The reason Leciester isn't in any way a relevant comparison or aim is because they got established in the PL by having more money to throw at it and therefore didn't yo-yo. We don't have the luxury of being well funded and neither do Burnley.
If we're talking picking up young players who could make it at a higher level, then i think we've clearly been trying to do that and because of this season players and the process is being labeled a failure. We should also remember that Jamie Vardy got 5 goals in his first Premier league season and there were thoughts he wasn't going to be good enough at that level.
We've only been in the Premier League for 2 seasons in the past decade, surely the time to judge if we've made the right decision is after it's had a chance to succeed.
