Wilder interview

It's conveniently a COH/"AI" signing whenever there's criticism of the manager's recruitment.
The same people say all the below (a touch of hyperbole here, but I'm making a point)

"Wilder got 92 (90 if you look at the table) points"
"The players folded under the pressure v Oxford, Millwall, Plymouth. Moore cost United the play off final"
"Wilder set this team up and look how successful it was"
"These players just aren't good enough"
"Wilder is a fantastic leader"
"These players are petulant, mardy and don't try"
"COH signed Cannon. PA wanted Brewster, Wilder wanted Watkins"
"Wilder made United all that PL money"
"They were only L1 players, Wilder's 'system' was the whole team"

The manager can't only be responsible for the positive, then blame the players for negatives

Wilder is a good manager. Some of his recruitment stuff pre 2019 has been the best value for money imaginable

Also

His teams are extremely cautious and formulaic in attack. He gets fixated on individuals rather than what characteristics his teams need to add with big signings

Need look no further than the goals for columnn to see our problem
we let go both creative and clinical players and got in nearly all defensive players

an out of contract forward available is a priority

This is what Wilder said, after signing Cannon:-

Wilder says Cannon is someone he's tracked for a while and is a signing which ticked all the boxes with everyone involved in the process.

Wilder said: "It's a super signing for us. Somebody we have tracked for a long time and known about for a long time. He's a young hungry player, position specific, we needed someone who could play on the shoulder and stretch the game, which he does. As soon as we talked about our enthusiasm to get this done, speaking to the boy, he knows what we're all about, and he played here for Stoke earlier in the season. He knows the club are ambitious and I thank the board and the co-chairmen for the backing and support, not just with this signing, but the whole process of what we've been going through and how they've wanted to support me during the window. We're all on the same page with this signing. Great age, we believe he'll play a big part and hopefully a successful second part of this season and beyond as well."

Cannon has shown great pedigree already in the infancy of his career, with Wilder stating there's plenty more to come as he looks to further develop another talented young player.

He added: "It's not just a signing for now, it is one which can take us forward in the ambitions which we have.

"He's an English number nine that stretches the game. I think there's always talk about players wanting to come to feet, he wants to run down the side. Pace and physicality and directness in his play, we know what a good finisher he is as well. There's development in the player, we are coaches - and I'm a manager - who tries to improve players as well, so there has to be that acceptance from the player to be better as well, which, after speaking to him, he's ambitious too. He can hopefully realise all his ambitions here with us and for me it is a really good signing."

Chrissy Wilder ,
His mistakes can be devastating

the ones that scored all last seasons 63 goals
United goalscorers last season:
Tyrese Campbell 10 - still here
Gustavo Hamer 9 - still here
Jesurun Rak-Sakyi 7 - returned to Palace, replaced by Ogbene
Harrison Burrows 5 - still here
Kieffer Moore 5 - sold for an unbelieveable £2m, replaced by Ings
Rhian Brewster 4 - declined contract, released
Ben Brereton Díaz 4 - returned to Southampton, replaced by Barry
Andre Brooks 3 - still here
Anel Ahmedhodzic 3 - sold to Feyenoord, replaced by Tanganga
Callum O'Hare 2 - still here
Sam McCallum 2 - still here
Oli Arblaster 2 - still here, albeit injured
Ryan Oné 1 - still here
Tom Davies 1 - still here
Tom Cannon 1 - still here
Own Goal 5 - was never here.

36 of the 58 goals scored by a United player last season were by players still here. Of the rest, the biggest hole is the 7 scored by Rak-Sakyi but theoretically he was replaced by Ogbene.

The loan signings are a disaster:

Bindon - already been replaced
Barry - already been replaced by
Ogbene - returning from a catastrophic injury
Godfrey - looks like he may be done as a professional
Soumare - ignored by 2 managers. Rumours of 'attitude' problems

You get 5 swings. To potentially have added no above average Championship players is pathetic
