Can anyone offer any insight into what he was like as a player for us (and for other clubs)? Heart on sleeve type character?

I'm too young to have seen him play.

He was in the Bradders/ Kevin Gage type mould. Never shirked a challenge, that was the way things were in that team.

Very much heart on the sleeve, dirty little bastard when he wanted to be and also had a little bit of quality at times.

He knows what this club is about.

He was a right back ,played very well in his first spell ,but it was a mistake to bring him back second time for both him and the club ,his legs had gone. He always gave 100% and had quite a bit of ability. Ive been to away matches a few times with him ,he wont want reminding about running round Kings Lynn with the cakes :)

Came into the team in 86-7 and stayed there as we were relegated in 87-88. Played most of the games in D3 in 88-89, but after that was a bit part player in D1 and D2 before we sold him to Rotherham in summer 92. Inexplicably re-signed by Thompson in 1998 and played a handful of games before being released the following year.

Basically, a rugged lower division defender who couldn't hack it in top two tiers.

I honestly believe that Wilder was very much underrated as a player. For a full back, he had a lot of technical football ability. Was unlucky not to play more for the Blades IMHO.

Can anyone offer a view on his managerial style as I know precious little. How does he set up his sides ? Are they passing teams or more upanatem ?

For what its worth, not sure upanatem is what we need but also accept we need to be a bit tougher than we have been in last 2/3 years in order to get out of Div 3 !!

UTB.

If he's too young to have seen Wilder play, that part of the description is surely useless!

A bit like when the snooker programme, Pot Black was on our screens in black and white.

Some viewers started to get colour TV and the commentator said, "He's going for the blue - for those viewers watching in black and white, the blue is next to the green!"

:D

Played right back under Bassett in the top division. Wasn't particularly attacking like modern day full backs, but pretty decent technically, got stuck in and worked hard for the team, like most Bassett players.

He wasn't the most gifted of players, but he was one who understood what it was like to be a Blade, and he show the grit and determination to get maximise his performance,

The Bassett sides were always sides who were never the best players in the world, but when you had them in the team the sum total was always more than more than the sum total of the parts. Wilder fitted in perfectly with that,

I remember Bassett making him captain for the visit of Southampton (his former club) just after we beat Forest for our first win and we thumped em. 4-1 I think but my memoryfor scores isn't great and I can't be bothered to look it up.

I'm sure that Darren or Silent will be along later if I'm wrong

Seriously though... He was neat, tidy and quite skilful for a full back of his time. There was a bit of a Wilder or Colin Hill debate at the time. I preferred Hill's no nonsense version of full back play, so did Dave Bassett too..

I think people who describe Wilder as "rugged" are a bit unfair. He was not Chris Morgan. He could play a bit as well - indeed, he was one of the few players in the team who kept the ball down on the deck.

He did well in 1989, didn't get in the team much in 1990 - Colin Hill was an upgrade - but had a good run in the side in 1991.

He was a damn good full back. Better than Colin Hill, in my view, who was a better CB than FB.
Look at our record in the 90/91 season and the upturn in form when Wilder was brought into the team at RB in November (at which point we hadn't won a game).

Bassett had a habit of discarding some players who seemed to do well and were skilful but perhaps weren't combative enough for him. Wilder was one of these. Alan Roberts was another.

I know he somehow managed to get a game ahead of Vass Borbokis at Sunderland away in the play-offs. What a disasterous piece of team selection that was - possibly on a par with when Mark Rankin got the nod ahead of McCall in the play-off final vs Wolves. Still thats the managers fault really - Whatever happened to Steve Thompson eh?

Think me and you concur on this Rev. Certainly didn't have Wilder down as rugged, just the opposite, however, like many of the more skilful defenders, he had a 'nasty' streak and could be a bit naughty with OTT tackles at times. Len Badger had this characteristic at times too..

We brought in Pemberton when we got promoted to D1, so Wilder became 3rd choice right back. I always thought the third division was his level. As I have said before he just couldn't cope with a speedy winger (cf Daley and Slater). United apart, he only had one season playing outside the bottom 2 tiers (Bradford in 97-8)

He nearly took my head off chucking his boots into the away terrace at Stockport on last day of 97/98 season. Players had gone down tunnel after game but he led the charge back into the pitch when result from St. Andrews filtered through and we had sneaked into playoff.....

Might've heard of them though....
Yeah I have, assuming "Bradders" is Carl Bradshaw? Kevin Gage has co-commentated a couple of times in Keith Edwards' absence so I can kinda tell what he's all about.

Your comment as a whole was useful anyway - cheers.

I will concede he didn't do much in 1990 but he had a very good spell - 16 games was it? - in 1991, and he didn't look out of place at all.

Our form was much improved when Wilder replaced Pemberton.

I was never a Pemberton fan, or a Cowan fan, chiefly because we never seemed to do that well when they played, particularly as a pair (from memory, we won only one game in 1991-2 in which they were both full backs - the 2-0 win at home to Wednesday).

Gage was better than both of them.

does it really matter what sort of player he was, surely its more important to know how he had northampton playing, they have walked league 1 and if he can identify the right players either from northampton or elsewhere, get us playing the right kind of football, hopefully to get us promoted

I accept he had a purple patch in the second half of 90-91, but that apart he never really did hack it outside D3.

Fun fact is that Wilder was the first player younger than me to play for United (and Stuart McCall was the last one older than me to play).
