Very disappointing given it's not far and they're not doing too badly.
Cat A is a complete joke though.
Oh shit. Shouldn't have said that. Mustn't upset the precious ones on here.

I doubt your upsetting anyone. They aren’t a big draw. They aren’t top 6. It’s not a local derby. I’d love for someone at United to justify the reasoning for a Cat A game. If this is Cat A then I’m struggling to wonder why we bother categorising at all.........
“I’d like to go to a game but finances are extremely tight. I may have to pick the cheapest and I can only afford one. Which should I pick? Weds or Wigan? Mmmmm tough choice”

I'd like to know how we can have a cat A game outside the Prem?

Birmingham Cat B Preston Cat À, Wigan Cat A

They are a rugby town, always have been, always will be. Hands up anyone who knows, or has spoken to a Wigan football fan ?

The pricing for some of the games for people who can only afford to pay on the day have been utterly shite.

Sheff Utd vs Wigan in the championship is simply not a cat A game, it’s a cat C game at best and the crowd will probably be about 3,000 down because of this.

Leeds United are historically the same.

Also I had a spell in the late 80’s and 90’s that whenever I met people on holiday from Leeds it was always Rhinos this Rhinos that.
Told him in Sheffield we have no interest in rugby, I probably know more about US Football compared to rugby,
This young lad from Leeds was so passionate about rugby league, told me it’s an incredibly entertaining sport and should have more tv exposure. When I have met Leeds United fans on holiday, they never seem to be from Leeds.

I think Leeds have a tad more football history than Wigan :)

Absolutely right.

Leeds is a rugby city with a tourist attraction football team.

I've lived in Leeds for a combined total of 47 yrs and it has always been a rugby city with the visitors to Elland Road coming in by bus and train from all parts of the country.

Glory hunters from the 70's and their offspring.

On any given day in Leeds the numbers Rhinos, shirts, jackets etc walking around the city centre far outweigh any Leeds United gear that may be spotted.

I suspect its Cat A so it gives you more ammunition against us.

True but the football league started in the late 1880’s.

Leeds City were playing in the league from 1906 to 1915, then were closed down, think due to tax fiddling, not sure.
Then a newly formed Leeds United joined the league in 1921 to date.

Football started in Leeds in 1906 but they were nothing clubs until the 1965 season, then of course they became a great club.

Many in the media talk about Leeds United being this tradition top flight club
But Leeds United and Leeds City have only spent a combined 50 seasons in the top flight.
Where as Sheffield United have spent 60 seasons in the top flight.

Also regards the F.A. cup, the city of Leeds has been in 4 finals winning just 1.
Sheffield United have been in 6 F.A. cup finals winning 4 times.

If football started in the 60’s then Leeds has been a big player in English football
But before 1965 Leeds United were a nothing club, seen in a similar light to Wigan Athletic.

When I was growing up in the 70’s my grandad and many other pensioners consistently said that Leeds isn’t a football area like Sheffield. Their support for a big city is really poor too, probably on a par with Bristol.

I'm just eating a crisp sandwich.
Do you butter it?
If not, it’s hard to keep the crisps in the sandwich. But I only like a thin spread even though it also improves the moisture and stops the sandwich sticking in the throat.

My favourite is cheese and onion.
I wonder what they prefer in Leeds?

I have the conversation about support with my Leeds mates regularly. For the fourth(?) biggest city in England that only has one team and a pretty reasonable catchment area to boot their support is bang average in terms of attendance at least. Compare it to Newcastle, a one team smaller city, or indeed Sheffield a two team smaller city then they really have little to crow about in terms of support albeit their more recent success has for some reason made them media darlings and not just locally.
Re the rugby/football debate I’ve worked in Leeds for years and while not scientific always felt there was a geographical split with north and west Leeds being more rugby and south and east more football.

I don't entirely agree with this.

I think you are right about South Leeds where historically the support was for Hunslet and Leeds United but East Leeds is a rugby league area through and through.

East Leeds RLFC has a long and illustrious history in the amateur game and before the demolition of East Street to make way for a new road the plethora of pubs from the Smiths Arms to the Spring Close, and everywhere inbetween, were rugby league through and through

I worked on the post in LS9 for years and there were very few football fans about but the blue and yellow of the rhinos was everywhere.

Swarcliffe WMC in LS14 used to run coaches to the Leeds RL home games in my young days and the direct busses from Headingley to Seacroft and Halton Moor used to be packed on Leeds RL home game days.

That accounts for most of the area of East Leeds :)
