I saw this on another site, the football results from September 1981. I remember being on holiday for this game and hearing the score on the radio. It was the highest crowd not only for Division Four but also Division Three, over 8000. Wigan weren't well supported then so there must have been a fair few United fans there.

I think this was the first time Utd won 3 points for a game??

The amazing statistic I always like to highlight from that 1981-82 season is

On a very cold night in Feb 82 Sheffield United played a local derby (top of the table clash) at home to Bradford City.
The crowd that night was 24,593 (our highest of the season)

On the same night reigning European Champions and title winners that season Liverpool played Birmingham City.
The crowd at Anfield on the same night was 24,224 (their lowest of the season).

Seems hard to believe that a bottom tier fixture (div 4 which would now be league 2)
could draw a bigger crowd than a Liverpool team who were current European Champions and about to win the league.

I remember Reg Brealey mentioning in The Star that the record attendance in the 4th division (bottom tier) was 37K for the Crystal Palace v Millwall local derby.
Brearly suggested that Sheff Utd might have a chance of breaking that record figure. Think we got 24K again in our last home match so a long way behind 37K.

It was March 30th 1982 and it wasnt a cold night. I had arrived at the ground late after playing in an rearranged Friendlies League match and missed Trusson's goal.

18 of the other 23 teams had their highest crowds when we were the visitors.

Our average gate was also bigger than every third division side’s average gates that season.

I was there too. Remember the Bradford fans throwing shiny golden ticker tapes on to pitch (almost Argentina 78 style) when the players came on the pitch at the start.
Surely my memory has that right ha ha

Also just done a google search and it shows the Liverpool v Birmingham fixture was 30th March 1982, the same night we played.
So my point about a div 4/ league 2 fixture being a bigger pull than the reigning European Champions, PL leaders still stands....that fact is hard to believe.

I remember Bradford's David McNiven giving our defence a hard time

Correct. Got to the ground late because some local numpty gave us directions to the rugby ground by mistake
I went with the Blades Travel Club in 1988/89 and about 12 coaches went to Central Park and did a circle round the car park before heading to Springfield Lane.

I remember going to that game, I got ejected before kick off after an altercation in the ground with a Wigan fan, I then queued up outside and paid again at the turnstile.
Before the game we met up with a load of other older Blades in Wigan Town centre, it got very messy, I remember one united fans chasing a load of Wigan fans while waving a meat cleaver around.
As a young un it was agreat day out.

Only thing I remember about that game was police chasing a Blade down the opposite touchline to where we were towards the corner flag, still can't get rid of the image.

Porterfield,Larry Lloyd,Roy McFarland and David Webb, all relatively new to management, taking their teams up out of the fourth tier. How times have changed.

Remember when we played Wigan at home...boring match heading for 0-0 then Edwards pops up with a late winner ....Larry Lloyd was their player manager in defence.
He was a bit of a character and a hefty lump of a man.

He was getting stick from the Kop the whole game.....them remember him pulling his shorts down and doing a quick moony to the Kop.
or did I just imagine it ha ha

It's hard to imagine any current managers doing moony's to opposition fans these days.

That was the night match, a big crowd that evening.

Officially it was 24k v Posh Utd in the last game, but heard the unofficial attendance from lads at the game it was way more ? But probably not 37k 😀 I was at the Posh away game a couple of weeks before and the official attendance was 13k 😂 It was nearer 23k than 13k. There were at least 6k Blades there and it was midweek. 👏 Boths sides were neck and neck in the promotion race, but Posh were blown away that night and never recovered.

Don't forget though, in those days 24,593 could have actually been anything between 24,593 and 27 million.
People paying cash at the gate, one for you, one for me, one for you, two for me, two for you, three for me.

The crowd for the Posh home match was never correct, the ground was absolutely packed all round, fantastic atmosphere
I can remember an open terrace to the left of the away end. Just after the kick-off loads of Blades fans climbed over the wall at the back to the astonishment of the locals stood on it😂

I was one of many Blades there , went in the car with my brother & his mates & got in 10 mins late as we saw the floodlights at the old rugby ground and thought that was where we were at .
No Google maps or At Nav in those days .. oh and if anyone said let’s take a paper map you’d have got laughed at . Grass bank away end great in Sept .. went back following in year after both us got promoted to the 3rd Division and it was Baltic & got pissed wet through ..All part of the fun in the old away days ⚔️

Always thought our club tweaked the attendance for the Peterborough home game when we won 4-0 . Granted didn’t have they away following of the Bradford match but thought it was late 20k’s .

I got this picture of another site it’s from our trip to Bradford in the 4th Division season , 2-0 win and one of many great away day trips that season .

The season still ranks as one of the best , if not the best for me personally as a Blade for a few reasons , probably the main one being was because it was the first season of success I’d seen in my time attending The Lane and the first season I was old enough to regularly attend away matches regular .Also It was my first season I was lucky enough to ball boy a good selection of home matches while playing for SUJB the highlight being running out onto the pitch in front of the players and hearing the roar of the crowd in the first home game against Hereford , felt so proud & felt 10 ft tall .

My debut at BDTBL against Palace in 77/78 this season followed by 2 relegations in 4 seasons .

I only missed 3 games out of the 46 which wasn’t too bad for a 13/14 Yr old lad whose games were funded by multiple paper rounds & glass collecting those being ( Hereford ( A) midweek North’ton ( A) midweek Colchester ( A ) . Went from the delights of the English riviera with trips to Bournemouth & Torquay to the not so wondrous Hartlepool , Tranmere & Rochdale . It included a Tuesday night trip to Highbury for the 2nd leg of League Cup & a night to forget at Altrincham in FA Cup . Probably my most memorable away days were Peterborough away another night game and 8k travelling Blades roaring on the lads to a 4-0 win & the unforgettable day at Feethams. ⚔️⚔️

You were lucky to miss Colchester away , the low point of the season! We've never played Hereford since, hopefully I'll get to go to their ground in the FA Cup one year.
