Apart from the obvious we want to finish above 17th (which seems pretty likely) we should all be aware of the financial incentive of finishing as high as possible in the league.

To give an example finishing our current 7th would give us an additional merit payment of £26.8 million as opposed to finishing 17th and receiving only £7.6 million. Every place up from 17th is worth at least £2 million additional prize money (compare this to winning the FA cup for which the prize money is £3.6 million).

I'm sure the club are well aware of these amounts and therefore should be willing to spend around £20 million in January?

Agreed.

But the bigger prize is having the loot to attract player improvements, combined with a willingness for said players to want to come here.

And of course finishing 7th could mean a Europa League place? 😎
So even more increased revenue from that.

There will be players out there, better than who we have got, who are currently sat on benches barely playing football in the Premier League. Some of them must surely be looking at us with a glimpse of interest.

Rather finish 17th and win the FA Cup than sit counting the millions to shell out in vastly over-inflated pay packets.
We're football fans first surely.

I disagree for now, but better than the poster the other day who said he'd rather we finish 20th and win the FA Cup.

Sign a player for £20m who will make 10 places x £2m difference in the league and pay for himself.

Mmmmmmm. Any prospects?

Plenty of them, I'm sure, but first and foremost they have to have the right work ethic.

Don't forget how many other sets of fans have said "none of their players would get in our team" (Villa, Deluded, West Brom, DirtyLeeds etc etc) even though our teamwork demonstrably beat their 'stars'.

You can bet that CW will be getting more agents calling him with the latest 'wonder players' available for a bargain £50k per week. They have to fit in, end of.

That poster, me, didn’t say he’d rather that happen. Nice paraphrasing.
