can't we do that in the league? Closing players down, attacking runs, players in space. It was entertaining and I like it

Blade56 . read the post match analysis in the Guardian as mentioned in a previous post . It sums it up for me . The better opposition from a higher league suits our style of play . If we can get out of this shit league 1 , who knows , the skies the limit.

teams come and park the bus a la mk franchise , when we get the room we are fine , we just got to figure out luring teams out

You are exactly correct and it is what frustrates me about some on here - giving it big about negative this and negative that.

The playing side is evolving and it takes TIME

One thing is certain, we have a good group of young, hungry and seemingly ambitious players in our squad.

Reminds me of a discussion under Robson after we beat Man City 2-1 at lane (balloon incident) but were shit in the league.

Just got back-unbelievable Geoff!!
The reason we don't play like that on a SAturday is because NC doesn't pick that side. Basham has to play CB( get rid of Paddy). Reed should start and MCnuts should get a run of games. Simples

Credit to him, I t was a daring selection from NC tonight, youth, inexperience but lots of heart and it paid off. Not nice their manager refused to shake Cloughies hand at the end.

I hear all this about teams that don't come to the lane to win being the reason we don't play like that in the league. What a load of shit!

The tempo we played at from the start tonight was great and they couldn't cope with it and it's this that was creating the space, they looked bamboozled at times,it was almost funny how they were passing it literally anywhere.

Now i will guarentee that if we took this attitude, workrate and endeavour into the league,we will go up,no doubt in my mind. It's just doing it what the problem is,getting the players up for the league. This is all down to the management of the squad because we now know we've certainly got what's required.

Absolutely fantastic lads tonight.See,it doesn't take much to make the blades fans happy and i genuinely feel that if we lost tonight,i,and a lot of blades fans would have still been proud of their efforts, well done everyone.

Is that your back handed attempt at a compliment to Clough Blade56??? Two weeks ago you were calling for his head, however, I'm sure you'll enjoy the second semi final Clough has gotten us to in just 9 months.

The reason we aren't firing on all cylinders in the league is down to the fact that it takes TIME to build a team, gel a team and get the perfect formula. The fact that Clough has now defeated 4 Premier League teams and 2 Championship in the past 12 months gives us some indication that he has ability as a manager!!

Have a little patience, Clough will take us up and give us even more nights like last night.

Agree Fulwood Blade . However in life and football especially , time and patience is always in short supply .

Absolutely fantastic night and performance . However , not sounding negative or boring , but the league is priority not the cup .

The cup run is a luxury , getting out of league 1 is a priority. Time is of the essence .

We will get promotion .

With regards to the OP, my thoughts exactly. And also as previously stated, the Grauniad got it spot on too - League 1 teams come and park the bus. But if we play like we did last night against our league opponents there's no reason why we can't get a decent wining streak going and get out of this shitty league.

Onwards, and hopefully upwards.

Here's the thing Bfk, I agree with your assessment of our Nige! What erk's me is that we are capable under his leadership to play like that so why oh why do we play such negative 'don't lose' tactics week in week out in the league?
I would rather win, lose win lose playing entertaining football than draw, draw, draw being safe as it has greater returns in points and provides exciting games.

Sorry but
Stuft the League WIN THE CUP.

To sum it up: teams put all their men behind the ball, we knock it around trying to manoeuvre them and create a chance, our fans become impatient and shout 'forward', the players then oblige, forcing it forwards and ultimately failing, those 'forward' fans then grumble again, the player as a result fears trying anything creative for risk of being subject to these grumblers.

Could be in non-league for all I care, cup tarts for life I reckon.

If you compare last night's team to the one that drew with Notts County three weeks ago, in the latter we had:

  • Basham not looking quite at home at right back
  • Harris being restricted as he didn't have a left sided player in front of him for most of the game
  • McCarthy being a poor passer at centre half
  • Scougall being restricted due to formation (we changed to an oddly shaped 4-4-2 during first half)
  • Baxter being uninspired and not having the stamina move into space
  • Higdon playing with his back to goal
Yesterday, we had so much more movement and I thought every player looked determined to contribute to our attacking play, always willing to help out a teammate. Our tempo and enthusiasm was great, but it was also helped by the team selection. Similarly attacking and balanced line ups will make it harder for League One teams to slow down the games at Bramall Lane. We should look at our performance last night and not accept that we'll have to be patient, careful, considerate, and measured, to eventually break them down. Let's roll over them, they won't be able to cope if we're at our best!
