why all this porter bashing played a big part in our f
great finish to the season he is part of cloughs squad and will more often than not have cameo rolls in
matches as he did last season.clough knows what he,s doing trust him!
Some people are selective in their trust in Clough. It's ok to back Clough when he brought back Flynn and Murphy, but not porter.

In fairness to porter he often comes in late in a game, never complains and just does a job. In numerous games, port vale away as an example - It was a shitty, Friday night, nothing game but he came on late and put himself about resulting in a turn around and a win.

For me, Porter is now a squad player, Clough recognises that we need people like Porter. I wouldn't like to see Porter doing 90 mins on his own up top every game as I don't think he has enough in his game to fill the role of the striker that we want, but he can be used alongside Pacey strikers or to come in late and try to make an impact.

He's not prolific but he does get goals often late in a game, which could be vital

Love the positivity but lets face facts Porter is rubbish, I don't mind him being kept on for another season. Bottom end of League one is probably his standard so being our third choice striker isn't a disaster.

Spoke to a Chesterfield fan when they signed him on loan his thoughts: He watched him in the warm up shooting practise he scored everyone he became quite excited by his finishing abilities, then missed an open goal (I think against Mansfield in the cup correct me if I'm wrong) and he realised why we had allowed him out on loan even though we was facing relegation at the time.

Hopefully Clough is saving the best to last because a big statement needs to be made with the striker we recruit.

Its not hate, its just that some of us dont want a football player with a complete lack of football ability playing for us, especially when we have been led to believe we are aiming for automatic promotion.

Wasn't it Clough that brought him back from his loan?

Does what he did or didn't do at Chesterfield really matter when we been able to watch him for the last 8 months at the Lane? He's been most productive for us under Clough and there's no reason to think he can't continue to be under the same manager.

I am interested to see what Porter looks like after a 'Cloughy' pre season now his injuries seem to be behind him

I can't agree with any personal abuse of a player, or slagging a player off just for being 'shite', which isn't wide of the mark. We know he's a trier, but at the end of the day, our club is aiming for promotion this season, and I think most fans acknowledge that a promotion team needs 50+ goals between its strike force in a season, which Chris Porter just isn't capable of making a real contribution to. I loved his cult hero status last season but I, as many others did, assumed it would be his final few months at the lane. In all honesty, I'm pretty disappointed we have re-signed him as I thought we would be looking a little higher.

He's going to be on next to nothing cash wise and if he's not playing then he can be farmed out again or just left to rot. Can't see the reason to be so concerned about it.

And never understood people that hate players for not being good enough. They don't pick themselves so hate the manager?

Yes we have watched him for the last 8 months and he has proved off the bench he is productive, and like I said I am happy for us to keep him on for another year and have him as a backup. But I don't rate him at all, which is my personal opinion. The chesterfield referral was to prove that other clubs he has played for also done rate him, I didn't see Shrewsbury or chesterfield begging for him back like we are with coady and brayford.

From reading this I'm assuming Porter is starting and playing 90 minutes of every game then?
I think it's a good signing, find me another striker on wages as low as his who's happy to sit on the bench and has a good a goals per minute as Porter did last season under Clough and then I'll admit it's a bad signing.

Exactly. I would be disappointed if he was our main striker last season but as a squad player and "super-sub" I'm more than happy with.

The stupidness with all these slagging off the signings is baffling. Half of us have never seen these players play. And, no doubt they're the same people who would be back on here at Christmas complaining that we don't have strength in depth when we got injuries and suspensions which is inevitable.

Realistically, Porter is not going to get much game time at all next season - he'll be an option on the bench to change approach if we are chasing a game in the later stages eg Nottingham Forest 5th Round of the FA Cup
I believe he has been offered a contract as a 'Reward' for his endeavours last season and it gives Clough a cheap option to have someone sat on the bench all year 'just in case' !

Not very often me and you are singing from the same hymn sheet Matt but I'm with you on this one !

Because opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one. Which is great apparently.

Oh look, picture of a donkey. Considering how much time you appear to have on your hands couldn't you have done better than that?

Ok, is this how the reply is supposed to go......

"Clap clap clap"

Fuck me, I despair with some of the guff on this thread.

We let Miller go and we kept Porter. We are trying to push Taylor out of the door.

A manager stands or falls by such decisions. Taylor apparently doesn't have the right attitude but that was never implied about Miller.

Is Porter a more effective sub than Miller? Probably, if only for his height and experience, not that he uses either of those attributes to much effect. Having a tall player on the bench enables a Plan B; shame he hasn't more power in his play. His main problem is that he is so lightweight. He's a drifter rather than a challenger, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, we should all wish him well because we will need him to perform on numerous occasions in a 60 plus match season. Fourth striker is always needed over the months. Someone above mentions the lad's past injuries and that maybe he can kick on, given a free run from injury. Clough must think so and he did sign him for Derby where he didn't set the world alight.

Porter says next season is "massive" for him. If he believes he can perform and kick on then that's half the battle. United fans have been wrong about numerous players in the past. But there are so many players out there aren't there?

Discount Porter at your own peril. He might be great when he gets back from Brazil :-)

As a bit part player, he will be value for money. That's all that matters. He was very effective in that role in the second half of the season. It's an exceedingly sensible decision, as one would expect from NC.

Oh, and it's only June...unless I've not spotted a change in the fixtures, we don't need a headline striker just yet...patience.

But....but...he's got one leg shorter/longer than the other!!!!

:D

and how do you know Ive got lots of time on my hands? only takes a second to Google donkey you know. If I had more time I could have Photoshoped Porters head onto if that would have pleased you, however it made my point, even after a pre season he will still look and play like a donkey

Look its not hard to see why people don't like him, he's been a average player for United, he's been involved in 3 failed promotion seasons, he is employed to get us the goals and he has come up short every season.
Praise is to be earned, look at Flynn and Murphy they turned their performances around and they are getting praises, Porter as improved over the new year and has gained some praise but some just can't forgive from past errors.

When did we start to give a flying toss about the opinions of Chesterfield and Shrewsbury fans ?

Since it made the point that someone wasn't very good and it suited our means by the look of it.
