Reason I ask if Northern Ireland get past Switzerland in the play-offs there is a real chance that Daniel Lafferty may continue to stay in their squad and make it to the World Cup!

UTB

(p.s Enda Stevens certainly deserves a look in for the ROI as well hopefully)

Alan Kelly was in the ROI squad in 2002... Patrick Suffo was with Cameroon in the same tournament, although was he still our payer at that point?

Suffo also won gold with Cameroon in the olympics. I know it's not quite the World Cup though.

Suffo was 'technically' still a Blade then. Good shout. However, Alan Kelly left the Blades in 1999

It's Suffo, though he hadn't played for us since February of course.

Wow Suffo is actually still playing football, for Coventry United. According to Wikipedia he was sent on loan to Numancia after the Battle of Bramall Lane in the 2001-2002 season then released before the World Cup so sadly doesn't really count.

Jostein Flo seems the best shout so far but its sad that was so long ago!

We've had this debate before on the board. I also thought we'd got rid of him but technically he was still on our books at the time.

We need to find the next Bobby Barclay!

Somebody gave me a statistic the other day, that the total number of England caps gained by all blades players combined in the last 50 years is less than what Carlton Palmer got. I think that link probably backs it up.

98 caps in total according to that :(

Suffo officially left the club on 5 June 2002, so he was still a Blade when he played for Cameroon against Rep of Ireland on 1 June 2002. The only other United player to play in the World Cup finals was Jostein Flo, all three of Norway's games in USA 94. Nilsen (Norway) and Kelly (RoI) were also in the squads at that World Cup but both didn't make any appearances. Shaun Murphy got close as a Blade to the 02 World Cup finals and played both games for the Aussies v Uruguay in the final play-off games when they dipped out 3-1 on aggregate.

As has been said on this thread already Suffo also won Olympic gold as a Blade at the Sydney Olympics, he also was an African Cup of Nations winner for Cameroon in 2002, scoring one of the pens in the penalty shoot out. David Carney also played for the Aussies in the 2008 China Olympics.

Not forgetting ex-Blade George Raynor. As manager of the Sweden national team he won the 1948 Olympic football gold, 3rd place in 1950 World Cup, Olympic bronze in 1952 & 1958 World Cup runners-up. For this he was knighted by the King of Sweden.

Ted Burgin (1954) and Alan Hodgkinson (1962) were in the England World Cup squad

Front row far left for Blades reserves

I still can't believe Dean Hammond never won any international caps.

Did Colin Kazim-Richards play for Turkey at a World Cup? I know he'd left us by then but I really feel like we 'made him' by giving him that platform in the Premier League when previously he'd only been known as the 'Coca-Cola kid'.
