Who are we worried will be retained?

It's been said that any improvement in performances towards the end of the season could see certain players remain here next season who were otherwise set to leave. Players who on the whole, this season and before, have underperformed.

But who in particular are we worried might remain at the club?

McEveley and Flynn wouldn't be the worst players to keep, McEveley at least has done enough to earn a new deal.

Coutts will be here next season regardless as he's under contract. Edgar could be signed permanently I suppose (and I hope not).

Who else is there? As far as I can see these improved performances aren't going to affect much as far as retaining current players goes.

Most of those who look set to move on are out on loan so any improvement in our performances won't influence what we do with them.

McCuntly, having him anywhere near the squad again would be damaging.

And as much as it pains me to say it, Brayford is now dead wood. He lost whatever he had about him after his first injury. The current one will probably cost him any significant future role in the squad.

In truth, pretty much anyone who isn't out of contract will linger at the club for some time, since they haven't exactly put themselves in the shop window with their overall performances.

Hammond is widely thought to be signing regardless. It's only Edgar that I'm concerned about. Overall though I don't think there's any reason to really take any negative view on promising performances.

Five weeks ago I would have agreed with you over Edgar, but he has been excellent in the three centre back role. If that's the formation we are going to go with I would have no problem in him singing on a free.

It was just that when you think we had about 13 players out of contract at one stage, and then you go on a run it brings into question whether we'd just start retaining people willy nilly.

McGahey and Cuvelier might be ones to worry about if they feature more in the run in, and certainly Hammond, Edgar and Flynn but to be fair to you when you break it down it's not half as bad as what I had presumed. Players like Harris, Howard, JCR, Kennedy, McFadzean all make it seem worse on the face of it but in reality each of their circumstances means that you'd presume that Adkins won't retain them. I hope he doesn't anyway.

Happy to admit how hasty I was in making this point earlier on.

Flynn's improvement now there's no pressure on him (an improvement not seen in away games, I might add) was predicted by a number of posters. Equally predictable is his return to sub mediocrity if we are dumb enough to give him a new deal.

We need players who can play in more than one formation and adapt well. It's ok 3-5-2 working for the time being, but when teams figure us out we will be back to square one and Adkins playing around with the squad till something clicks again.

I just don't know. It's the same about Chairman Posnig. I think I know what he is doing or intending and then he makes decisions that have 95% of us picking our jaw up from the floor and shaking our head. Earlier this season I would have sacked all but Billy, Basham and Brayford. Then Sammon had a purple patch (one good game and a couple of average ones) and he was back in. Brayford really dipped in form see copy of my post below.

Who is the threat to his position? He's not bombing forward. He does work well with Coutts which is why he doesn't need to bomb forward. I stand by my opinion that he has lost form and allows the man inside too often.

I would have cashed in on Adams because I thought he was a BBB who was incapable of improvement and had a bad attitude and now he's improving on all fronts. Macadoodle is even looking as though he can play a bit if asked to do the simple things in his favoured position. Long started to look like a keeper again but he still hasn't convinced me. They're all too bloody inconsistent. It's been the story of this season.

He has been here nearly 5 years, and I'm still yet to see what he actually offers and what his best position is! We need 2 new wingers (amongst other positions!) and my concern is that we keep Flynn so the boss thinks 'ah well we only got 1 winger in, but we've still got Flynn'. Before you know it, we have another season where we have a winger without pace who contributes 3/4 goals a season.

No it isn't, believe it or not. Do you suggest we get rid and give ourselves yet another signing to make? Like it or not, you need squad players, and McEveley's a decent enough squad player. You won't find a more suitable player for the LCB slot either if we're to carry on with 3-5-2.

Flynn. He puts in decent performances at the lane now and again but away from home it's like playing with 10men at times. He's not done it consistently enough over the 5years he's
been here.

Jay Mac in the left of 3 centre backs has done enough for an extension. Although we still need another 3 in the summer and ideally he would be backup.

I hope we can bring in a good experienced keeper and keep George as cover, he's done enough for that at least. Wigan got it spot on with jussi jaaskelainen.
