Where do the FA get these refs from?

could this be an argument for technology in the game again?

Play has been stopped as he gave the pen, so I wouldn't see the problem in this case.

I agree to all the above posters that refs have a very difficult job to do in hostile surroundings.

Shocking decision to initially give it but credit to the referee for having the balls to reverse it. I didn't even think they could reverse a card once it had been given.

Credit to Brentford too for accepting the decision.

what I couldn't understand was why the Brentford player put it out for a goalkick on the restart ,surely United should have conceded a corner ?

if I remember right I thought howard picked the ball up after the tackle.

This is why you go to consult the linesman before you make a decision!
They aren't there to look pretty.

It would have made far more sense for the ball to be dropped for Howard to pick up, as he was holding it when the whistle blew. Considering the ball was in play (hence the drop ball) why would they have deserved a corner?

I was going to say this shows why we need video technology for such incidents, but already been said.
That incident took 3 or 4 minutes to resolve, with the ground in uproar and ref getting grief from players and the crowd. Video could have resolved that in 20 seconds, calmly. Luckily the right decision was made in the end. It would have been nasty if it hadn't.

I wondered why Howard didn't pick it up. Their player seemed to hit it out with some force as though not too impressed. Good job he didn't decide to score instead. That would have been fun.

I detest ref-botherers when it's orchestrated and prolonged. Chelsea degrade the whole sport with their intimidatory methods.

But you have to be allowed to ask the ref to speak to the linesman if he hasn't and the mistake is blatant. At the very least the captain should have that right. There's not a team in the land who wouldn't have surrounded the ref tonight.
My harshest memory of our return to the top flight was at least two Chelsea players crowding the ref for a GIVEN decision in their favour, usually with Terry/Lampard leaving the situation having the last word. I'd be overjoyed if they took all the showboating teams away and had a European league and left the top 12 Prem teams to form a new league set up, been touted for 20 years why don't they just bloody do it! I'm sure the decline in local attendances Europewide is down to the stress/indifference of having such an 'important' top flight everywhere (Germany excluded)

watch this being the talking point against LO. The way things are going at the lane atm with crazy decisions I wouldn't be surprised the ref gave something like that.

I had a clear as anything view and being completely unbiased it was never a penalty in a month of sunday's and that would have remained the same had the boot been on the other foot and it been them not us.

The lad jumped in and got did but did unbelievably to get back and make a top class challenge and that is what it was, clean as a whistle in my opinion. I am completely mythed by how the referee in his position could have seen it any other way to be honest, I thought his positioning should have given him a decent enough view.

Ahh well as said fortunately the ref consulted the lino who obviously saw it the same way as most of bramall lane did and thankfully it got overturned!.
Cloughie spoke to him at half time and the ref's explanation was he had a bad view. Cloughie's only gripe was the hasty decision on the pen and red card without looking to consult the linesman.

So a ref gave a decision, even when he admitted he had a bad view? Yet we get stone wallers denied...

I hope our luck changes for the semi.

Surprised Clough accepting the "bad angle" argument. He is right the correct decision was made in the end, but if the ref had any doubt, the decision should not have been made!

Ugh, what do we need to do for a pen nowaydays.

Class tackle! Maybe the ref couldn't see "foot on ball" as it were. Only logical explanation. Why on earth he didn't go over to the linesm...oops i mean referee's assistant...actually no, no i don't, i mean linesman....before making a decision is the big mystery.

That thought had crossed my mind. If he had slammed it in the net the referee would have had to give the goal. Worst the scorer could have expected was a yellow for unsporting conduct.

If the incident had been reversed and we had been awarded the penalty, their player had been dismissed etc I think 99% of us would be arguing his decisions should have stood! wouldn't we?

I still think the incident, whichever way round will cause ripples through the game with players, managers and fans believing a strong protest can get a referee to change his mind or linesmen to get involved in changing the decision.

Here's a prime example of a referee and linesman sticking by his decision.

Right or wrong?

I agree totally that technology would have been of benefit.
The ref got it wrong and he will not be the last to do so. At least, he had the balls to rectify the situation. I suggest that we have had very few in the past with the honesty to do that.. At least we had an honest team of officials. He could just have left it at a sending off or suggested that, despite the tackle, there was an intent to foul

WE all know what such a decision in the past cost us!!. Well done ref and team. You showed us an honest and human side to officiating.

I was miles away and it looked an absolutely terrible decision.

First of all credit to the Lino who must have had a clear view and had the guts to tell the ref what a shit couple of decisions he had made.

Why did it take so long to review it ? And actually some credit to the ref to withdraw it. Some have such huge egos they don't budge.

The thing is though the lineo kept his mouth shut and it was the players that forced the ref to consult him. Full marks for eventually coming to the correct decision but the linesman should show more initiative without having to be prompted.

I dont understand why the ref has to go to the linesman to consult him. Cant the linesman shout up the ref on his earpierce or flag for a consultation if he knows the ref has made a poor decision. Whats the point in calling them assistants if they just stand there moitionless thinking "what a balls up hes made there"

Don't think linesmen have a mic just a buzzer to refs arm. 4th official has mic
