Where clough is looking.

Just read an interview with clough regarding transfer targets, obviously he has declared an interest in Sammon to the press but he also tells us where he is looking.

"We have a list with about 15 names on it, Sammon is one of these but any striker in the championship who isn't getting regular football is a potential target"

It seems Clough is doing the right thing. Rather than looking at Young gambles from Premiership youth teams as DW1+2 might have done in the past or players who have impressed in League Two or Scotland etc. Clough looks to be targeting experienced strikers in the championship who are half decent but can not get into the championship clubs for whatever reason.

I'm no footballing expert (I support United after all) but this sounds perfectly sensible to me, and far less of a gamble than recent strategies

Great idea. And in a strange sense, I trust him to source strikers who can fit in and bang in goals rather than us sign makeweights and deadbeats (like Marlon King) in the vain hope they will be arsed enough to put in 90 minutes and see the full time whistle having made the opposition defence work for it. There is also the measure of being canny enough as s striker to be in position, not be lazy enough to be caught offside numerous times and to read the game effectively. Nugent at Leicester does that and has done it with previous clubs. He is the CF we could do with right now (okay, we won't get Nugent, but someone who can do that sort of thing)

The one thing we don't need is another false dawn.

It's not easy to bring in quality players in January. Most clubs don't want to sell their best players so you have to offer significantly more than a player is worth. For example, say we wanted Andre Gray from Luton; they're in a promotion campaign so would only sell him for daft money. All of a sudden a young prospect becomes a marquee signing, with all the expectation and pressure that comes with it and no pre-season to settle in.

An out of favour championship striker with something to prove, a Sammon or a Madden whose career is still ahead of them, on loan 'til the end of the season is probably the best option. Our prime focus should be ensuring we're safe before the end of the season.

i've seen Sammon a few times and he doesn't look much like a footballer. Finishes like Porter but is strong and mobile and would probably do Porter's job better than Porter. There's a difference in class between L1 and the Championship and plenty of players who look crap in the Championship benefit from a drop into L1.
I do think he be a frustrating player at times, like Porter he misses easy chances.

I think it is inevitable and probably the sensible thing to do. I think Clough has enough experience to avoid signing a disruptive waste of space - the one thing he has consistently spoken about is how important it is to him that a player has the right approach/character. He knows damn well that the objective right now is not to finish worse than fifth bottom. Two or three solid loan signings to see us through to the summer when I suspect much more reshaping will occur.

It makes perfect sense to me. The least risk option at a time when we cannot afford to gamble with our league position. We need experience and a touch of quality (in the context of Div1 football this isn't a big ask). That should be enough to guarantee safety.

They're being harsh on Sammon. I've seen him a few times, puts himself about, links up play, scores the odd goal.

He's by no means a world beater but should be decent in League One. We can and are doing a lot worse! Supporters are always quite harsh on their less eye-catching players. Remember how some of our fans were with Stephen Quinn? Who's laughing now?.......

Leon Clarke - another player we might have laughed at a few years ago, but now we aspire to. This is the position we're in.

We need to keep our eyes on the FA Cup. More than a good chance the new striker will come from a Championship team who gets knocked out of the 3rd round. This would mean they would be less likely to be needed.

Sounds like a good plan and there are good precedents:

Norwich went from the 3rd tier to the prem largely (IMO) through the efforts of Grant Holt, signed from Shrewsbury.

Southampton similarly with Lambert from Bristol Rovers.

Shipperley did a similar job at the Lane.

Sammon would be a good signing IMO and it is not unrealistic.
