That might be true but if it's always been on the site of a piggery then why wait until 1973 to start using the name "pig".

Some event must have happened to inspire that name and from my memory Wednesdayites were so proud of their new badge design of a simplified Owl outline, so some Blades commented that the badge looked like a pig.

I have no knowledge of that or why it started, I was merely replying to a question on whether the farm was true or not.

I'll leave the speculation to others, not my cup of tea.

They were called Pigs long before we were, and not by Blades either.

Stocksbridge Rugby club are nicknamed Pigs , it never bothers them lads . i can not understand why that stupid named club , {you know the one where the main stand is above what was once a open sewer } are not proud of their heritage , as we are the Blades .

What can I say. I just really like reading Wikipedia.
Fair point, but then you will know that any soft Piggy twat can alter Wilki at will, hoping his embarrassing efforts will gratify his sad simpering Porcine mates?

I read it for entertainment.

They used to call us Arabs thinking it was derogatory until the Arabs suddenly became very wealthy. They only started to call us pigs in the 80's after they realised that is what we called them, then of course they thought they had started it.
As far as I know, we call them pigs because pigs are thought of as dirty, smelly animals and for no other reason. All this stuff about them playing on what was a piggery and butchers aprons is just someone trying to work out a reason for it, as is them saying it's because we play in bacon shirts.
They are pigs because they are pigs and we invented it as an insult.

Nah. The bacon shirts thing is nearer the truth. It goes something like this.

Wednesdayites won't eat bacon because it reminds them of the Blades' shirts. Any suspecting Unitedite of course has their own calendar for days of the week.

It is of course Monday, Tuesday, Day after Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.:)

I will no doubt have posted this before. I was articled (apprenticed) to a lawyer in Chesterfield in 1974. I used his photocopying machine to do the Bertie Blade News which I distributed in the old Minerva. Jack Charlton was manager oft pigs at the time. On the back of the paper was a cartoon called the "red and white wizard". One of those cartons contained the words "begone foul pig". I borrowed the pig reference from a Barnsley fanzine called Toby Tyke a little earlier than this. My wife appears to have destroyed all the original proof copies of the Bertie Blade News. Stuart Beresford, ace drummer and my teacher, you remember this. Confirm it please!
