What's the Process for Signing Players?

So when we spend money, its stupid purchases, when we don't we've got no ambition.

No. When we spend money, it should be in arears of the squad where we have just flogged the best player, rather than hoik in a former crowd pleaser and force him and two others to play in the hole you have purposefully and needlessly created.

I'm all for spending money. Our midfield at the moment is shit-on-toast and the defence could do with three players at a better level. We need a consistent goalkeeper. We also need strength in depth at the front, because if Sharp gets injured or jailed for rape* we are fucked in the ass. Again.

This could apply to anyone but I'll use Dean Hammond and roundish numbers as an example.

Adkins decides he wants Hammond to stay.
He thinks he's worth £10 000 per week wages.
He thinks he's worth a 2 year contract.

Who makes the final decision on this? In the end it is a football decision. It'd be very hard for a bean counter to say to Adkins, Hammond is worth £9 000 per week.

Anyone know what the process is?

Does the manager have an overall budget for the season and it's up to him to allocate it? Or is it case by case?

Well....... it appears to be something like this.

Adkins says to the Board ....... " we've needed two decent CH's, a midfield general, a decent winger and a prolific pacey striker for 5 or 6 years so I think we should address this immediately if you want to have a chance of being promoted this season ".

The Board ( via big Jim ) reply .... " will any of those cost a fee ? "

Adkins says ...... " of course they will you witless numpties, do you think that other Clubs give away their players for fuck all like we do ?" ( but says it slightly more tactfully so Jim's not upset )

The Board say ..... " can't we use what we've got or get somebody old / injured / Scottish on a free ? "

Adkins says ...... " yeah sure we can you fu**ing set of know-nothing pratts, if you want to stay in this Division for another year "

The Board reply ..... " lets try the kids then "

Adkins puts head in hands, groans and says to himself ..... " no wonder this Club has spent the last 5 years in this fu**ing agricultural Division and that's not going to change anytime soon at this rate " !!

I'm led to believe that it's a nightmare to get anything signed off at Bramall Lane because everything needs sanctioning by two owners rather than one person.

I was also told that whoever is supposed to manage our transfers was that busy with his own business throughout January that he was able to spend virtuelly no time whatsoever on his transfer duties here.

I understand the nightmare for Adkins is that one owner wants rid and the other wants to keep him. Adkins has till the end of the season to prove he is worthy of another season by all accounts. Getting any player signed off on January was impossible because even with the squad we have it should be easily in the play offs.

The squad is largely shite.
Having a high wage bill doesn't mean having a squad good enough for top 6.
How many of our squad would get in the squads of other teams in the play offs?

The squad we currently have was never good enough to make the play-offs, as evidenced by the league position and was crap before as well as evidenced by the league positions in the last few seasons.

We have consistently lost our better players and replaced with dross ....... hence our mid-table position this year.

What needs to change is the quality of the players brought into the Club, not the manager !!

To answer your last question ..... I would venture to suggest ...... very few.
Possibly Brayford, possibly Sharp.
What will make interesting viewing will be when the L1 team of the year is posted ....... see how many of our heroes will be included in it.
I'm guessing none at all !!
