What's changed about lundstrum this season

and to think of how many doubted his selection at the beginning of the season - the Mousse as well !

He's actually more comparable with Fleck in terms of play-style. Unfortunately came in for Coutts at a time when our whole team relied on him so heavily.
 
Playing for England under 18s a few years ago. Reminds me a little of Ross Barkley in a way.

 
Well simply, he’s upped his game so far this season. And the slight change in system suits his game . I’m refusing to be all lovey dovey because I have seen enough of him in the past to still be abit sceptical! Just keep proving me and others wrong with performances on the pitch!
 
Said before the season that I reckon he'd be a main feature and that the Prem would suit him. Now he needs to stay consistent, add more goals to his game because he's well capable and more assists, which he could/should have had already but for one or two glaring misses from McGoldrick.

Always rated him and I'm very pleased for the lad as he's shown some serious bollox.
 
Yes he has come on leaps and bounds, but people pretending he has always been at this level or displayed this skill set is a rewriting of history as if that was the case he would’ve been in the starting 11 already.
 



IMO:

  • he now has a defined role in the team
  • he had a full preseason playing with the rest of the first team rather than in reserve sides, so has a better understanding of the system / on-field relationships
  • he's simply getting better as a footballer - he's 25, it can happen

I can't say he's doing anything differently to his previous couple of seasons with us - it's not like he's suddenly smashing them in from 20 yards, or beating three players with a dribble. He's just doing the same things better / smarter.

And yes, changing his name from Lundstram to Lundstrum has helped.

He always wanted the ball before.

He’s a decent player and has shown it in glimpses but in the past he was either filling a role (Coutts or Duffy mainly) and with the best will in the world, he wasn’t going to replace them.

However with a decent preseason and more confidence to not rush things he’s slotted in well.

He was also one for the Hollywood pass, the gerrard or beckham style 40 yard pass which was fine, but when there are simpler options it’s not always necessary. So perhaps the big change from him is his decision making.
 
His new role in this system suits him better. Remember he was being asked to play Coutts’ position before. Norwood has that now. If you stuck Lundstram in for Norwood now we’d still have the same issue. Albeit I think Lundstram would know a bit more about how to conduct now, having been with us a little while.

He has improved though. And it’s not just a case of CWAK sticking him in a slightly different role and thinking “eureka”. He’s always been technically very good, but he’s lacked the dynamism and awareness to cover the kind of ground you need to do in our system, particularly in the Premier League.

Credit to CWAK, they knew we’d need box-to-box midfielders in both LCM and RCM now we’re in the Prem and saw the capability in Lundstram. But more than all, credit to Lundstram for working hard on his game and even harder on his strength and fitness. Oh, and sucking it up in the face of pelters from our fans and showing the resilience to overcome it.
 
Deffo our Box to box mid. How many times in the second half was he appearing on the edge of the area to pick up clearances or pull backs? Got on the end of Moussets fantastic pick out... and was also on the edge of the box unmarked when stevens pulled back to Robinson.

This also contributed to the winner Vs Palace.
 
He’s always been a strong athlete. Wilder has just got him to KISS (keep it simple stupid!).

Once before the instruction “win the ball and give it to Tony” was enough to create a legend.

The Magic is Strong Again
 
I think as soon last season finished, and as one of the players who wasn’t listed or released, he realised that he had a golden chance to become a Premier League player and he spent the summer grafting his bollocks off to get in to the best shape he possibly could to try and force his way in to the side. He seems a lot more mobile that he did before.

I was one of those who didn’t think he was a bad player when he came in to replace Coutts when he got injured, but also acknowledged that he didn’t have the skill set to replace a quality ball player like Coutts. The way he quickly became a scapegoat for the tantrum throwers was embarrassing.

My favourite Lundstram moment came last season in our champagne performance of the season at home to Aston Villa where we took them to the cleaners. With time running out and Grealish acting like a complete cock, he absolutely nailed him with a solid, hard tackle
 
He looks more confident and more intune with the system.

Also I think it helps that Norwood is doing the play maker role and he can crack on getting around the pitch a bit more.
 
Hate to piss on the love in, but I think Besic has been brought into try and take that starting place off Lunny.

If it doesn't happen, then that'll be because Lunny is doing the biz.

Very much so. Met his dad in the Globe and he said he was so excited about him playing in the Prem because it suits his game. Less blood and thunder,bit more space and time. Lunny felt the same too and it's working well this far.
 
For me nothing much:

He's not covering for Evsns' mistakes

He's not playing in the memory or shadow of coutts

He's not now filling in for someome else

He's playing regular football

He dies seem to have bulked up a little.

I have an oxford supporting mate and he said he was class.

Naturally i saw this from the begining.
 



Having seen him play once or twice when he arrived from Oxford vs the last few games, it seems to me that:

  • He's a bit more athletic and has more of an engine
  • He works to join up play more in the shorter range rather than trying cross-field pings (although these are still in his toolkit and he does switch play when appropriate)
  • His height and strength in winning Premier League midfield battles was obviously earmarked a while back, whereas in the Championship we possibly leant on the more intricate likes of Fleck and Duffy to work in and around opposition
  • His attributes are a natural compliment to Norwood's range and someone like Freeman's directness - as a midfield trio they have balance
What is apparent is how Wilder must have told him he was in his Premier League plans as he warmed the bench for two years and barely batted an eyelid.
