I reckon we need 5 maybe 6 players to improve for next season.
CH with Stearman,Jack and Basham.
Duffy type player in midfield alongside Coutts and Fleck.
LWB,keep Stevens and let Lafferty go.
2 strikers,1 target man and 1 quick, with Billy and Leon.
Sign Blackman if possible, let Long go.
I would let the following go-
Lafferty,Ched,Wilson,Lavery,Reed,Long,Carruthers.
I can’t see where Holmes fits into this system and we also have Lundstram,Evans and Leonard as cover.
What are your thoughts?

Got to improve the starting 11 at LWB and at least one of the CF positions.

Agree with most of that apart from the need to bring in another Duffy type, as for me he is still one of the first on the team sheet.
Overall I wouldn't mess with the midfield too much but would consider loaning out Leonard out for a few months and perhaps bring in a more experienced midfield destroyer type.

Re Holmes, I admit to being absolutely flummoxed why he hasn't featured. I don't buy the theory touted by some that Wilder suddenly doesn't trust him, I mean how much can things have changed between then in a season and a half since they last worked together? Holmes hasn't become a worse player, in fact he has stepped up a league from Northampton and proved to be Charlton's key man, by all accounts with a spot on attitude. He is exactly the type Wilder would normally go for and in this case he already knew Ricky's game and personality inside out.
Something doesn't add up, if he wasn't trusted he wouldn't have even featured in the squad. I just hope we see more if him next season, because he is a very talented lad.

The key thing with Holmes must surely be his lack of tactical discipline.

Pressing when pressing is required.

Tracking back when tracking back is required.

It’s hard to give or think of other reasons why he just hasn’t figured at all. Even from the bench !!

Jamal Blackman, a centre-back, a LWB and a centre-forward.

We need to see more of Heneghan, Leonard and Holmes. Hopefully Coutts will make an instant impact when he returns and Brooks will step up into a more important role.

Players to get off the wage bill:
Long, Lafferty, Hussey, Reed, Carruthers, Hanson, Lavery, Donaldson, C. Evans.

Also, please don't sell JOC or Fleck. Thanks.

Holmes is a left midfielder and would play there in a 4-4-2 but he doesn’t fit into the 3-5-2

Strikers galore.

Other than Billy as a Peschi- style super sub and probably Leon (any stupid offers and I’d flog him as I cant see him hitting the heights for us again), I cant see any of them being here next season.

Easier said than done, I accept. But we all know the main area we failed this season.

Any cash left? Bring back Blackman, even if its another season loan. If we did, and Eastwood has developed enough to step up as number 2, I’d consider offloading Moore (no particular reflection on him, just finances).

I always thought he could play along the whole attacking line mate tbh, but yes he is stronger on the left cutting in. Even still, why on earth did we buy him if he doesn't fit in the 3-5-2? It's not like Wilder has a habit of changing the starting formation so I doubt he was bought in as part of a plan b.

Blackman

Stearman - Commanding CB - O'Connell

Baldock - Coutts - Fleck - Freeman?/New LWB
Brooks/Duffy/Goalscoring CAM

Prolific Striker/Prolific Striker
GK Backup: Moore and Eastwood
Defence Backup: Basham (CB,RB), Stevens, Leonard (CB,RB),
Midfield Backup: Lundstram, L.Evans, Holmes, Slater, Leonard (CM,CAM),
Strikers Backup: Clarke, Sharp, Donaldson

Sell: C.Evans, Wright, Lafferty, Carruthers, Long, Reed, Hussey, Hanson, Lavery
Loan: Thomas, Heneghan

That's a 25 man squad.

I don't really know who to sign in those red positions but these would be worth a shout:

CAM - Harry Wilson on loan from Liverpool
CF - Sam Winnall (If Derby get promoted)
CF - McBurnie from Swansea if they stay up.

I reckon CW will be thinking along the same lines :)

We need the owners to stop fucking about and get shit sorted!!

We need a good 5-6 players.

Guessing costing will be £10million + wage budget for 5-6 players and an increase in £6million on wages.

If we don’t get this we won’t compete.

If the board said to Wilder he can have £5m for transfer fees + required wage money, but any transfer fees recouped can go straight into the kitty. I'd sell Brooks. We could get £8m+ for him and replace him with an older better player, for less money. Brooks is a luxury for us at the minute.

Re Holmes not playing, I think Wilder was reluctant to change a team that was creating so many chances, like a gambler who finds a winning combination. Hence Baldock keeping his place over Freeman, Holmes rarely tried etc etc. I think Chris will look back on this period and see that, but if the front two had put away chances as they had done during the first half of the season some of those draws would've been wins and we'd have been in the playoffs.

The money thing, whilst an obvious factor, appears a red herring for a team who have only just been promoted. Feels like Wilder's using that more for next season's campaign (sort ownership & proper finances in place for transfers).

I've a feeling Leonard will feature more regularly next season, the pre-season will allow management to properly assess everyone.

Interesting point, but Wilders worked with him previously he surely must have known about any lack of tactical discipline??

It's my view that we do not have a single wing-back good enough yet for this division. Given another season I think Freeman could make the grade but Baldock and Stevens just haven't a final ball despite all their energy and effort.

I think both could make solid full backs and so could Leonard.

So maybe the system to be played is the key. Could Wilder change to 4-4-2 or 4-3-3?

Whichever system I think our manager should go for say 4 quality additions, the whole budget on quality players certain to improve our squad at this level. Players who make a difference.

Order of priority: 2 strikers. 1 central defender. A left wing-back if 3-5-2 maybe a keeper if not.

Departing players alter the equations but we have a big squad of good players , all much of a muchness though. We need the icing on the cake, expensive icing not thinly spread.

If we sell Brooks i'll have to seriously consider making a pledge.

The much of a muchness thing is a good point. Based on the assumption they are on decent contracts, they could be difficult to shift in order to make room for better (hopefully) replacements. Some, if not most, might have to drop a division. Would they be willing to take a pay cut, or will they just stick it out?

Interesting Summer ahead in many ways.

Said similar a few days ago Crabs. We could end up with some L1 standard squad players whose wages are out of reach of many L1 teams so we're stuck with their wages, or part of them. People never seem to take this into account when talking about budgets. Even though it's happened before.

I know people say it's a "kids" game and all that, and I'd never really measure the real thing against it. But one of the things I have learnt from playing Football Manager is that even when you get rid of your overpaid shite, you very often end up paying for part of their contract when they leave for another club.

Same thing applies to Blackman looking at it from a different angle. Anyone who thinks he's going to take a £10k pw pay cut to move from London to Sheffield is living in a dream world.

I'd have to agree, even when you factor in the difference in the cost of living, nobody in their right mind would take a cut like that.
