What was everyone’s reaction when they first saw this back in ‘06?

Away from all the doom and gloom.. why has this “zebra” theme of colour only been used as a one off? Personally the season wasn’t good, but it’s definitely one of those forgotten kits that I’d love to see get more recognition

It's an okay kit but it's a very Newcastle United looking shirt.

Possibly one of the worst away kits ever?

Like a wannabe Newcastle.

The home kit was excellent that year though (looking, not the material! the necklines tended to stretch easily and become distorted). Same shorts and socks as away, just inverted black/white.

I can’t remember. But it may be chronicled on this forum.

I’d like to think I thought it was shit, but getting into the mind of 16 year old me, I doubt it.

I was driven to doing my own designs for the next 17 seasons in the quest for the perfect away kit. This kit obsession has carried me through the dark nights of winter and the glorious summer days in equal measure. Surely perfection is just a matter of time!
Or, didn't even notice, why would I even bother?

Take yer pick.

Remember when they first came out, both home and away kits had solid sleeves in the long-sleeved versions that were available to buy.
They were quickly changed to stripes to replicate the playing versions.

Not allowed, the Prince has been told by his Saudi cousins to scrap the idea, copying unacceptable.

There's loads of the long sleeved version of this shirt on Ebay with various PL numbers but no names on. Presume they are genuine and old stock because it's one of the strangest choices for an away kit.

I was fine with it.

Anything that isn't a variation of that garish luminous yellow radioactive shite that we've been intermittently churning out since 1989 is ok by me.

Yes but you ignore the additional benefits of a luminous shirt. You can wear one of those shirts and flag down airplanes. So it would be handy if you worked on the runways at East Midlands airport.

Could be wrong, but I think we got a grand total of one point whilst playing in that kit.

Stripes and hoops are too distinctive and tend to be too strongly associated with one club or two clubs.

and yes this was more Cleethorpes than Byker Grove

2006 them were the days, we were an established prem club back then. i remember Jagielka scored a cracker against us. i was gutted, how dare an promoted team score a goal like that.

That wide open neck meant it usually draped off one shoulder like Temuri Ketsbaia in a fucking prom queen dress. All the badges bunched up together looking shit, awful sponsor too. Otherwise fine 😆
