Love it. Half the way through reading it I started to get concerned as to how I'd manage to get enough time off work to go to all the Europa League games.

You must be in the same clinic as the author then TopBoy :)

A better "what if" scenario, would be "one if Webber's effort that hit the post had been a few inches the other way and gone in"?

Mind you, given United's history, we know the answer would be "Wigan throw everything foward and in the 6th minute of injury time, Paddy comes out to clear a through ball, kicks the ball against Jags' bollocks and the ball rebounds into the net...."

Nice article.

Although I can't find the link McCabe waxed lyrical in a national newspaper about how he thought we could establish ourselves in the Premier League and push for European places within a couple of seasons - with the links we were making to European and Brazilian sides it really seemed like we were going somewhere.

I didn't think it meant we were going to League One.

If we’d stayed up Warnock would have deserved a new contract.
He would have kept most of the same squad together including Jagielka and improved upon it.
He wouldn’t have signed 30-somethings like Hendrie, Speed, Ehiogu on long unaffordable contracts.
Even if we’d gone down the following season he would have left us on a much firmer financial footing than Robson did.

Interestingly, the likes of Naughton and Walker probably wouldn’t have been considered ready for Premiership football and their careers would have been very different.
Our relegation helped to make them or at least accelerated their progress.

I'm concerned as to what fans of Fulham and Newcastle might think. Still, at least Liverpool fans would be pleased as they never sign Andy Caroll in this parallel universe. Just tell me we don't sign Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing!

I'm still reeling from the torrent of abuse we have taken from all comers on twitter after the signing of Joey Barton and his subsequent incarceration for chinning Gary Madine in a trendy Sheffield cocktail bar.

I'm afraid my abiding 'what ifs' are:

....McCabe had had the courage to sack an 'out of his depth' Warnock immediately after promotion?

....Kenny had not behaved like a circus clown against Everton?

....Jagielka had not bizarrely and inexplicably played volleyball in his own penalty area?

By the way, that explanation is a bit overdue isn't it Phil? Phil? Phil.......

I can do that for you if you're willing to sign a disclaimer...

It works thusly. I'll stand behind you and ask you to jump as high as you can. On your way up I'll give you a hearty shove in the kidneys and we'll see what you do with your arms in response.

Case solved. Invoice despatched. :D

Actually, by way of a proper answer, I've summoned up the courage to find the video and linked it at the exact point of the shove to limit the pain of viewing. C&P here (I can't stop the website wanting to embed the video player on receipt of a youtube url).

You can see the Wigan fella jumping into the back of Jagielka, highlighted by the fact Jags lands on his arse rather than his feet.

Or suffer the full version here:

I'll never listen to Sigur Ros again.... :(

My biggest what if is what if the ref in the away game at West Ham had not had the idea that the midget Geary was someone impeding the built like a brick shithouse West Ham goalie as the latter punched the ball to Kozluk to sweep in what looked like an injury time equaliser.

You could maybe even go back further - what if we hadn't capitulated against Wolves in 2003? Or more recently, what if we'd have ended our play off hoodoo against Burnley in 2009? Makes you wonder what position the club would be in; would McCabe have packed up and left?

Now don't be telling me the fee's too high....

The great advocate and bon-viveur George Carman QC was once asked by a colleague: "What did you charge X for that libel case, George?"

The immediate reply came "£632, 427.53"

"What an odd amount" said the colleague.

"Well, that's all he had!" came the reply.

:)

Sorry JD, I think you're allowing the "We ❤ Jags" factor to cloud your judgement, mate. For me, I still can see no reason why he did what he did...

Anyone else?

Very good. :)

I guess that wasn't for his engagement with Middlesbrough FC (as a result of our Robbo's fabulous decision to not bother turning up for a game).

According to the Independent, Carman charged £10k a day for his services back in 1997. Blimey.

Are you suggesting that Jagielka deliberately threw the match and the season?
Thereby betraying the manager who gave him his chance, his teammates/friends and all the fans who admired and supported him?
That's a pretty big implication to throw at someone. Would you say that to his face?

38 points equals out of his depth? Don't really think so. Hull, WBA etc have stayed up with less I think and Brown even Robson got lauded.

McCabe then steels Roy Hodgson away from his job as Finland manager and the clutches of Fulham, after promising more funds than Al Fayed is willing to offer.

Hilarious.

The worrying thing is, had we stayed up and he had he indeed parted with Warnock, I still think McCabe would have gone with Robson. We'd have seen exactly the same justifications - knows the league well from his time at Middlesbrough, managed to successfully survive that one season when West Brom stayed up etc etc. We'd have been staring relegation in the face, but unlike in the Championship when we were clearly under-performing, because a relegation battle would have always been likely McCabe would have probably resisted the temptation to get rid of Robson. Who then might have been billed as 'the best man to get us back up', a la his actual appointment in 2007...

No, of course I wouldn't. I would ask him:
a) Why he has never given an explanation to those admiring, supportive fans?
b) What is the explanation?

Not too much to ask, surely?

He made it clear that he was starstruck at the thought of Premier League football. In away games he set up to snatch a draw or lose by as few goals as possible. Promoted teams before and since have shown that you must be positive to survive.

He failed to recruit a single 'quality' Premiership player, preferring to spend our money on multiple sub-standard purchases.

He, together with the chairman, squandered a golden opportunity to cement our place in the Premiership when we were ten points clear in January.

He thought (as many of you, ludicrously, still do!) that committed, scrapping upanatem was some sort of substitute for real talent.

He was out of his depth, as he has demonstrated on each of his brief flirtations with top level management.

Rob Hulse was anything but sub-standard up to the point he was injured.

Was his failure to recruit his fault, or the fact we weren't prepared to offer players the necessary wages? It was between ourselves and Blackburn for Stephen Warnock for example during the January window - I'd be interested to know if Gary Naysmith was essentially offered the same wages we apparently offered him.

There were plenty of poor signings that season. A lot of people pick out Fathi and Shelton - I think they were always signed with the following year in mind though. Claude Davis is for me the worst. He did have a few good games admittedly, but he was wildly over-priced, injury-prone, inconsistent - we'd have been better off sticking with Morgs and Jags as the first-choice two, bringing in a cheaper defender (or getting someone in on a season loan) as cover alongside Lucketti, and then investing that cash elsewhere in the team.
