What improvements do you want to see next season, in terms of our style of football?

Whhhhaaaaatttt?

I just like us to improve the players playing the system. Not change the system. I like the system.

I also understand the frustration regarding getting the ball into the box. However...
A) there wasn’t much point putting the ball in the box when we were toss in the air.
B) we actually missed a lot of good opportunities from crosses last year.

I think with a bit more of aerial threat and pace to get in there we’ll get balls into the box a bit earlier.

Need to be patient and understand this is how we play. It works.

Provided we keep him, could brooksy play the "winger role" that people have mentioned, he is pretty fast, can go through defenders, he's calm on the ball to cut in and shoot, and has the ability to pick out a nicely weighted pass or cross. With him in the squad and coutts playing it to him, should be a spectacle to watch.

last few games showed how much we missed the options of bursting in the box , shooting and quality of crosses from Freeman

The system works , with the right personnel , We just didnt have the quality of cross or triangle s to get round defenders , at times it was coming off , but not as much as when the quality . ie coutts and freeman were there

There are players we can bring in to improve our alternatives, when needed, And the release of several forwards who didnt produce means theres a chance to improve on the final most important bit, burying it in the net

Defenders dont like being turned and our system puts that fear in them when its in full flow

4 maybe 5 new faces can get us the 10 extra points to make the play offs , We dont have the limitless investment some have , but luckily a lot spend badly
to get top 2 a lot will have to spunk a lot of money

Width and pace - twas ever thus............. Alf Ringstead; Gil Reece; Billy Dearden; Dane Whitehouse; Colin Morris; Alan Woodward etc.....
I'd even settle for another Ronnie Simpson for Gawd's sake!

The football has been great since Chris came in and I'm very grateful for that, however, we can always improve and if we are to change something about the way we play next season, (players permitting), then I'd like to see less reliance on attack, from defenders, and more reliance on attack from strikers.

I'll explain:

Chris has deployed a style of play where the onus on attacking comes, to a large extent, from the half-backs, overlapping down the flanks. The likes of Baldock or Stevens, are entrusted to get forward and deliver balls into the box. Occasionally also, they'll be backed up by Centre backs going forward to provide additional attacking threat. This tactic is based on a possession game, with frequent switching of the ball from side to side until we find a gap in the other team's defence, and then we pour men into that gap to exploit it. This is something that Chris refers to as "over-loading". Let's be honest, it's worked really well in many of the games, few teams expect to have a centre-half marauding through their defence or overlapping on the flank. However, there's a downside to it as well.

It's very much a game of "cat and mouse", holding onto the ball and waiting for a gap to appear. So it's somewhat slow and predictable at times. When faced with a 10 man defence it can be quite laborious and result in a bit of a stalemate. Another disadvantage that I see is that it often results in defenders taking the lead in terms of attacking - so you have slower players, with less goal-scoring instinct, in key positions around the box, when really what you want to have is your strikers marauding down on goal. Take Stevens as an example, there are many times when he's led the Indian charge down the left, but on getting into the box he doesn't have the final burst of speed, or quickness of feet, to turn that into a goal-scoring opportunity. So, it comes backwards again - to O'Connell, to Fleck, to Duffy, to the other flank, to Basham, to Baldock, back to Basham, back to Fleck, back to O'Connell, back to Stevens....and we start again.

In my opinion, the way to fix this would be to have pace up front, particularly on the flanks. So, when we start that attack, the ball is with a "winger" type player - who can run like the wind and get past defenders - and either put a devastating ball in to our strikers - or cut inside and have a pop himself. This is something we don't have at present. And it's why we end up with this slow, side to side, then occasionally backwards, build up.

Oh for a Paul Devlin type player (or a Jamie Murphy). Someone who can set off at speed and take the ball with him and scare the living daylights out of the opposition defence with his pace.

Maybe it's coming?

1) PACE
2) a CD to sit in the middle of the back 3 - with PACE
3) Freeman at RWB
4) a new LWB with PACE
5) someone up top with PACE.

going to cost a fortune though.............ahh well, I can dream.

UTB

We absolutely must improve on corner kicks. Only Brentford got more corners than we did last season and the ratio of corners/goals (or corners/shots on target) must be abysmal. It got to the point towards the end of last season where I wasn't particularly bothered about us getting one as I had no confidence that anything would come of it.

pet hate is a professional footballer not been able to clear the first defender from a dead ball. It happens at the highest level tho, piss poor - drop it 8yds out, too far for keeper to come, too close for him to save. I'm no Pep (or CW for the more bias), but surely that would yield a few a season?

Freeman

Coutts

2 strikers to compete with Billy and Leon

Less 25 yard worldies allowed by defence

Lafferty to be allowed to compete with Stevens

Take the brakes off again

Been said a lot: I agree with those who stress the need to counter with pace. In general we need to move the ball through midfield more quickly. Once Lunny and Evans came into the team we lost a bit of our confidence to cope with opposition pressing. Instead of trusting ourselves to play through, either with quick passing or running with ball at feet, we too often resorted to back-back-sideways-back passes. I think Lunny and Evans both have the potential to be good enough but they lacked the confidence last season.

Get somebody on the far post for crosses. Too many just go straight out to touch for their throw. (That's if it gets past the first man).

And get a long throw man. It's too predictable to throw to a man who passes straight back to the thrower.

Take throw-ins faster as well.

And for the fouth "throw" suggestion, throw some money at a fast winger who is able to cut in for the final third.

Just to learn how to close out a game from a dominant winning position would be my top of my wish list.
Cost us a playoff spot last season.

Stop cutting back when we get to the edge of the box, whip it in quick before the defence get set... when we started doing this cutting back the goals dried up and we became predictable as we looked for Leon clarke every attack..

Practice corners, also send the centre half’s running into the space where the ball will be “old school” for a bullet header, not the floated cross bullshit we’ve been seeing.. (well, mix it up at least and make us less predictable) which opposition centre half would like JOC arriving at pace during corners and set pieces?

Trying to close a game out with 10 mins plus added time and playing with it in the corner, go row z Morgan style instead if we need to kill a little time, we aren’t good enough with the ball at our feet to do this especially when tired, and it shits our defence up when we turn possession over (Cardiff a perfect example of this) Morgs would blast it over the stands and then use the time to set back up properly..and do it again if he needed to..

Close down the attacking midfielder quicker, this would help the goalie when the before mentioned worldies are attempted, they must know which player will have a dig, warm his ankles a little early on if we have to..

Don’t let them run through, take a yellow when required, far too often we allow a player to run miles with the ball and normally it costs us, this is down to playing with better quality opposition so know your limitations and take one for the team instead of letting him run and create something, every decent team in the world uses this tactic..

Appoint a captain in the centre of defence or midfield as sharp isn’t guaranteed a starting place, the captain needs to be the first name on the team sheet and that’s not billy anymore, we need to let sharp focus on goal scoring and nothing else, same with clarke who appears to be deputy..

Have a dig from the edge of the box regardless of who you are, we quite often overplay and end up turning possession over anyway, so why not have a go and give thier defence another thing to think about, when nothing’s on or it’s dropped to you just get it on target with pace and you never know.. we create plenty of chances for the strikers regardless of these often squandered situations..

Get Baldock (or preferably Freeman) and Stevens/Lafferty to play in early crosses instead of ALWAYS wanting to go right to the bye line. Giggs, Woody Hoddle, Currie Beckham Scholes etc etc would all play in an early cross for a player running into the box. Also, how about a midfielder making that telling, cutting pass that divides the defence for an ‘inside right or left’ to run on to?

An end to the incessant sideways and backward passing. Shoot from outside the fucking area.
Learn to take a set piece with a degree of accuracy.
Teach both keepers how to kick a fucking ball straight.

Take throw ins quicker rather than wait for all our players to be tightly marked. Train someone up to throw the ball further than 10 yards. It’s 50/50 if we retain possession on a throw in.

Don't play 3-5-1-1 it rarely works and leads to slow build up play.
Always play with at least 1 number 10 for the full 90 minutes in a 3-4-1-2 formation.
More positive substitutions when leading in a game.
Try 4-2-3-1 for certain key games with a defensive midfielder away from home.
Sign more height and use them at corners (front post, penalty spot and back post).
Encourage Blackman (if he's signed again) to use his exocet missle throw more.
Cut down on the high intensity training throughout the season - the players ran out of gas.

None of this tippy, tappy stuff.

GERRIT INT' BOX.
I think we should have 9 players on the halfway line, let the goalie give it a huge up and under and all run after it at the same time. All big feckers an all.
The crowd could start a oooooooooooohhhh from when it is kicked until some one else kicks it.

We should know what we want the style to be. It's the one that got us 100pts. The problem has been that we've stepped up a level and the opposition is better.

We were able to use creative free kicks, push further up the field, switch to 442 in games when needed, throw players down the overlap, and we could do it all in no small part because our players were good enough to do it, and cover when we lost possession.

The only way we improve the things people want to improve is by improving the first eleven. Wilder said it himself; he's getting the most out of this squad.

I don't want the style to change. I love watching it and it allows us to compete at a level higher than you would expect from the sum of the parts. The tweaks in personnel and execution I'd like are

More height
Better set piece delivery (improved with the arrival of Evans)
More pace/dribbling ability in our forward line
More ruthless in both boxes
