My worst away day was Villa in the cup in 75. Pissed on 4-1. TC was total shite - and this was a year we thought we had a chance.
Yeah snowing as the teams came out and TC looked up at the sky, my mate said that's him done for today and it was he never had a kick, Villa were in div 2 as well.

The Swindon game was 22nd August 1987. We lost 2-0. Steve Foley played for them after leaving the Lane in the summer and the Swindon manager (Lou Macari?) had a dig saying how surprised he was as to how unfit Foley had been when he joined them.

Macari in charge then??????? Jimmy Quinn scored or did something that made me hate him, ha ha, Can't remember what though now. The mists of time eh?

I can remember a touch line flare up as I think Billy McEwan kicked thier physio's bucket of water over them.

One of the goals in the Swindon game was scored as a result of a close season rule change: I think Leaning was penalised for holding the ball too long, and they got a goal from the indirect free kick.

and the one was a late "consolation", which I never saw due to the mass brawl taking place on the away end.

For many years this was the only goal I missed us score at any match I attended. Didn't happen again until the match vespa mentions in post 80 of this thread (got to Turf Moor at 1-1, and seconds before Deano made it 2-1).

oxford 4-1 sheff utd. Martin Aldridge (rip) scored a hat trick, Nigel jemson missed a penalty, and Matt Elliott was immense for them. it was possibly the coldest I've ever been, the performance was depressing and I think we left 20 mins early which is the only time I've ever left a game before the final whistle

And I've no idea how we got one that day, we were so bad. That was one of my work-all-night, watch-United, go-back-to-work-all-night-again matches. It was pissing down with rain and everybody at work suggested I'd have been better off not going, to which I replied, "I wouldn't have been anywhere else."

Here's my selection of 'worst' games. I tend not to go much when we're really bad so missed many of the dreadful Heath, Robson, late Blackwell and Adams games (other than seeing some on TV).

Worst
26 May 1997Crystal Palace v Sheffield United1-0
If we knew then what our play-off record would be like, it might have been easier to take.

06 Nov 1999Barnsley v Sheffield United 2-0
23 Nov 1999Sheffield United v Port Vale 1-3
Two Heath games I did make and God we were awful.

29 Jan 2002Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday 0-0
I listed this, not because we played badly, just that I still can't to this day work out how we didn't win this after battering them. It was the same a year later at Hillsborough where we should have won and lost 2-0, but I wasn't there for that one.

26 May 2003Sheffield United v Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-3
So much expectation, and we got what we normally get in important games...at least I was stopping with the non-football supporting in-laws in Cardiff for the weekend so could forget it and not suffer the long drive home.

03 Mar 2006Sheffield United v Crewe Alexandra 0-0
I think this has been mentioned elsewhere as it was the snowy, frozen Sky TV game. Should have shook on a 0-0 and not bothered playing, but we were on a great run and certainly weren't expecting this result.

05 May 2007Aston Villa v Sheffield United 3-0
I could have listed so many away games during our Premiership year (Fulham and Spurs stand out from the ones I attended), but this was criminal. Going to try and keep the score down, well 2-0 and we would have stayed up, at least if we'd attacked we might have lost 3-1!

13 May 2007Sheffield United v Wigan Athletic1-2
Another load of circumstances contrive to relegate us. This time I was there to experience it, plus with internet phones I could keep a check on the other scores, and didn't enjoy it one bit.

23 Sep 2008Arsenal v Sheffield United 6-0
As I said above, I didn't attend too many Blackwell games, but this was an absolute hiding. Men against boys, and it wasn't Arsenal's youth team who were the boys in this game.

24 Sep 2011Wycombe Wanderers v Sheffield United 1-0
Difficult to complain too much about last season, but I must have attended two of the worst performances at Wycombe and Stevenage. I think this one takes the award due to Wycombe's position in the table and our inability to fashion much in the way of chances against them.

26 May 2012Huddersfield Town v Sheffield United0-0
It was the inevitability of it all. More angry than disappointed since I thought if I didn't go we would finally end our bad play-off record. Even being 2 up at the penalty stage, I still didn't dare to dream...
Most Boring
28 Sep 1991Sheffield United v Wimbledon 0-0
I still remember this primarily for the utter boredom of it. All boring games now compare back to this 21 year old 'gem'.
Craziest
05 Oct 1994
Sheffield United v Ancona 3-3
I didn't attend the West Brom match so have to choose this. Was this the one with lots of red cards?

Bloody hell Larders, it was ALL YOUR FAULT then. If you'd stayed away we'd have gone up for sure.

NB: For all you "scape goat" addicts out there, in this instance I have made LardSardine a genuine scape goat for our play-off defeat.

As I would too, except I was in Guatemala for our PO Final defeat to Burnley, so it seems it doesn't matter what I do, we're doomed.....

This game for me in terms of utter boredom.

ds?

Not quite right. If we had lost 2-0 or 1-3, we would have had the same GD as Wigan but have gone down on goals scored (prior to the Villa game they had scored 35 and we had scored 31). We had to keep it to a 1 goal defeat at Villa to leave Wigan needing a 2 goal win.

What pisses me off about that game is that 1 bloody point would have made us safe and left the Wigan game a carnival (for us anyway). Villa had nowt to play for and would have had half a mind on the beach. It called for a 10 men behind the ball, kicking anything that moved performance, they wouldn't have fancied that. As it happened we tamely surrendered.

You're radically out as to when that game was. It was on 6th April 1985 when Porterfield was manager. We had had a good run which had pulled us fairly clear of the relegation places and the players ahd lost interest.
We pay to watch these people play. They see fit to lose interest. Wankers.

Was my first away match , dad took me along with a bunch of lads from fellbrig pub in norfolk park, remember thinking there end ( holt end) was fuckin massive. They were also in league below us if memory serves me right.

Blades Reserves v Forest Reserves (2-10): I am one of the few hundred people who can genuinely claim to have seen this (not that it is much of a claim). It was back in the late 70s/early 80s at the time when the reserves would play at home on Saturday afternoon when the first team was away. I can't remember a great deal about who played for us that day but I do recall Tony Moore (always a candidate for a worst Blades XI) getting sent off. From what I recall, Forest went 2-0 up only for us to pull it back to 2-2. They then snatched the game away from us with 8 late goals.

As I came from a mixed faith family with both Blades and Owls in the household I thought I'd keep quiet about it thinking no-one would ever find out. Unfortunately as soon as I walked in I was greeted with a chorus of 10-2! 10-2!. The bloody teleprinter on Grandstand had seen fit to print the score.

bloody hell. there must be about a thousand of these.

personal worst was i think ipswich at home after we'd sold deane and fjortoft. the atmosphere was horrific. my mind may be playing tricks, but it seemed to be a really low attendance?. most people there were seething befire kick off, then we produced the most inept performance imaginable. then the infamous car park incident. best bit of the night to be honest.

the wolves play off final was particularly horrible. lucky not to be 6-0 down by half time. to play like that in such a big game was incredible. we'd have got battered by feckin frickley that day.

strange one, but being a kid and listening to burnley v hull on the radio was one of my worst blades experiences. if i recall correctly we needed hull to not win by 3, to get promoted. and they were 2-0 up early on i think? anyway it was horrible listening to it! even though we got the right result. it was like sex with susan boyle. a happy finish, but 90 minutes of sheer hell to get there!

The first game after we sold Deane and Fjortoft was, in fact, on 17/1/98 and was a 1-0 victory over Wolves (Marcelo). The Ipswich game was on 3/3/98 and was our first game after Spackman's resignation. We lost 0-1, the first home defeat of the season.

i stand corrected! nearly the same thing though. i didnt realise he stayed so long. i thought he resigned about a week later. my memory obviously isnt too good. :( did we have any other games between the wolves and ipswich ones? i dont even remember the wolves game. i presume i didnt go to that one, or any others between wolves and ipswich. . otherwise my memory is even worse than i thought.

5 of us in my bro's Hillman Imp - ended up on the Holt End, yeah it is huge. Had to pay 10 bob to get to the away end. Think they got promoted that season.

I was at that game also. Went to the next at Villa Park in Nov 75 and we were worse ,we lost 5-1.

Games between the Wolves and Ipswich ones:

24/1/98 Ipswich A (FAC) D1-1 (Saunders) - Was that when someone got sent off for shoeing Taricco in the last minute?
27/1/98 Huddersfield H D1-1 (Saunders) - Earl Barretts debut?
31/1/98 Portsmouth A D1-1 (Knight og) - Linesmanouch day?
3/2/98 Ipswich H (FAC) W1-0 (Hutchison pen) - Johnson missed a pen for them?
7/2/98 Oxford H W1-0 (Ford) - Gareth Taylor hitting the woodwork three time?
13/2/98 Reading H (FAC) W1-0 - (Sandford) - Some bastard broke into my car and stole my coat. No question mark required
22/2/98 Birmingham A L0-2 - meh
25/2/98 QPR A D2-2 (Saunders, Stuart) - meh
28/2/98 Bradford H W2-1 (Taylor 2) - a potential candidate for coldest game, one of the goals was a ricochet off the ref?

Marks out of ten please Dazzler/Silent.

Marks out of ten please Dazzler/Silent.

24/1/98 - no that was the play off game the previous season. Chris Short got sent off for us
27/1/98 - no that was in the Wolves game on 17/1/98 - it was Derry and Cullen's debuts though
31/1/98 - yes.
3/2/98 - yes
