Where the hell has the "West Ham spent waaaaay more money than us so they should have a better team" argument come from?!

Net spend over the last 5 years.

1. Man City – £601.98m
2. Man Utd – £484.88m
3. Arsenal – £267.88m
4. Everton – £225.42m
5. Brighton – £214.86m
6. Wolves – £205.22m
7. West Ham – £187.49m
8. Bournemouth – £176.95m
9. Aston Villa – £166.65m
10. Watford – £125.69m
11. Leicester City – £124.83m
12. Newcastle – £122.91m
13. Chelsea – £115.57m
14. Liverpool – £107.58m
15. Tottenham – £106.62m
16. Crystal Palace – £75.69m
17. Burnley – £59.4m
18. Sheffield United – £56.71m
19. Southampton – £22.32m
20. Norwich City – £25.42m profit

These are excluding the amount spent this season. The gap you talk about isn't all that big considering WHU hardly spent this season, us on the other hand...........

There is realistically 30-40m difference in spend during those 5 years, to say they've been in the PL for all that time and we've been here 2 seasons speaks volumes. On future projection based on those numbers we'll have spent double what they have over a 5 year period, yet people are trying to excuse us and saying we're a far worse team because they've spent more than we have!! If anything, this shows we waste money.

Whats their wagebill? How much from selling players?

Take outgoing profit off that, and youve got a significantly higher spend for west ham

Wages innit

See my issue in this is, we pay McBurnie "cheaper" wages but a high fee. Why not go out and give Danny Welbeck a contract? His wages will be higher, but no fee needed, I'm pretty sure Welbeck will not be on 20mill a year at Brighton.

A risk, you could say with his injury record. But Welbeck has more goals than McBurnie this season.

That's just one example.

Zero resale value.

What resale value will we have if we go down? We won't gain a penny on any of our signings. 20m for McBurnie, 18m for Ramsdale, we ain't getting that back anyway if we're in the Championship.

More than we'd get for Welbeck obviously. What happens if you sign these aging, injury prone players and go down anyway?

Welbeck is hardly a proven bagger though. And we get stuck with his wages, tearing up the clubs wage structure, for a low probability punt.

And looking at those adjusted spends. You're looking closer to 350 million, not including high wage frees.

Welbeck is on a 1 year deal at Brighton, I'm pretty sure its little risk to them.

A Club doesnt have to spend money to achieve results. Look at the players we have brought through the Academy at zero fees.
Jagielka
Walker
Naughton
McGuire
Carlton -Lewis
Just a few, how much would they have cost at the height of their powers.?

Its not about the transfer fees, it’s about wages.
We’ll never be able to compete when we can only offer championship mid table wages.

Goalkeeper is the best example for me. So many experienced Premier League keepers who, yes would require big wages, but no where near the £17 million we've spent on Ramsdale. I'm trying to avoid criticising Ramsdale but his performances so far don't make him look worth £7 million never mind £17 million.

I am just giggling at Norwich

Id say changing your wage structure to fit danny welbeck would have been less than worth it for us. A low probability punt. Thats what he is. One goal isnt going to change my mind on that, and ive always had a soft spot for him.

As for the main thread, i think we've seen its a little different than you posted.

It's all wages.

We're paying 20 mil for Championship players and paying them Championship wages.

Other sides are paying less for Premier League quality players and paying them Premier League wages.

Makes sense financially because Wilder doesn't want to see us go bust or something.

Though the £ 100 million + per year from being in the PL helps pay for these players, signings and wages.

It's a balance thing, accountancy, it's about ins and outs.

You can't just look at one side of the coin - lol.

We’re trying build a team for our Premier league future, when it looks very likely we won’t have a Premier league future. Wilder used to like players with something to prove. Well there were plenty of experienced pros out there willing to have another shot at the Prem........Danny Welbeck was one of them.

Would you have mentioned him if he had not scored yesterday ?
He will probably disappear again as well !

Yes mentioned it on here. When Watford got relegated.
At this moment in time I think a couple experienced Premier league “has been” would have benefited our current crop of Championship players quite well.
